Unicorn wanted

Hi... Apollogies, my first post on here, I am hoping to get the benefit of your wisdom...
I have been car shopping for a month now and just can't settle on what I want, I was hoping for some suggestions.
OK let's start at the top... Budget is 8k cash plus the grand trade in value of my current car.
I am a big lad, 6'6" 17.5 stone, kids are older, family trips don't happen but I do do a bit of "teen taxi" they are both 6 footers. Split from the ex so this is a car to please me and my idea of a car but still considering the practicalities of being a dad
I do a lot of short trips rount town in the week, with a couple of longer motorway runs over the weekend maybe totalling 75 miles a weekend.
I am currently driving a Toyota Avensis 1.8vvti estate, it has been a stunning car comfortable and dependable, but a bit sedate, I do find I am hammering down my right foot a lot and wanting more grunt quite often, and as a result real world mpg is late 20s to mid 30s.
I would like something with a bit more poke, nice handling, not too expensive to run, reliable, that i can be proud of owning and isn't gonna scream midlife crisis... It is gonna have to last me 5 years...
Hence the unicorn... !
I started off looking at the seat leon fr but having spent a bit of time looking into VAG cars it seems to me that it's a bit of a Hobson's choice with regard to engines, diesel isn't really appropriate as the dpf on them seems to be a PITA, the FSI lumps have issues with guzzling oil, the newer TSI seem nice but there are some serious timing chain issues..
Top of the list ATM is a series 3 320i m sport, any other suggestions ? Thanks for your help
