Here's a conundrum.

My R400 has its IVA on the 15th June, the documents will be sent off to the DVLA register the car on that date.

I have a personalised registration for the car. It's on retention but the retention period runs out on 23rd June.

I can renew the V778 by post but will the DVLA action that and get the new V778 to me before the 15th? If they don't it will delay the sending in of the registration documents, until the new V778 arrives.

If I leave things as they are, will the DVLA process the documnets they are sent on the 15th before the V778 runs out on the 23rd? If they don't then the retention will run out.

I've had to wait over two months for the DVLA to get its act together and allow an IVA test to be carried out, so I have little confidence in them managing either of the above.

What do I do?! scratchchin

Can you not just let DVLA assign you a number, renew your retention as and when necessary, then put your private plate on at a later date?

That's a bit tight! I have a vague recollection that the IVA process can use your certificate of retention etc. but you might have to discuss with CC to confirm. The £25 renewal fee might be a worthwhile investment to prevent cockup or disappointment...

Yes, that's an option that I might have to take! It'll cost me an extra set of plates but might be the best option, bearing in mind the way they operate.

I'm a bit loathe to as it's only their delays in dealing with the IVA requirements that have made is an issue but it might be something I'll have to do.

Not sure what you mean about the IVA process, the reg number doesn't seem to come into the process until after the IVA, when the registration is applied for.

There's no £25 fee any more, so that's not an issue, it's just timing and a lack of trust in the DVLA.

I've decided to do this. Bit of a hassle getting the insurance C note changed and buying an extra set of plates but I just can't see the DVLA getting things done in a timely manner and I'm not prepared to argue the toss with them on their £1.53 a minute phone line.

Sorry, dumb shorthand. I got CC to do all this hence the dim recollection; it was the registration process.

No worries. CC are doing it for me but DVLA have really dragged their heels and taken weeks to issue the stuff needed for the IVA to be booked, which again has taken 3 weeks. Upshot is that once IVA'd there'll be only 6 working days for the car to get registered before the retention expires.

I don't think the DVLA can do anything in 6 days..........

It's taken longer to get it IVA'd and registered than it took me to build it, and I took it easy.

It's easy, take all your paperwork to the local DVLA office, they are really helpful there, on no sorry they've closed them all.

Pretty sure, everything needs to go via Swansea, as all local offices have been shut.

After my IVA (preferred to do it myself - had built the car, so wanted to be responsible for as much of getting it on the road as possible; even though it was a bit of a 'mare due to a less than diligent PBC by Caterham), I took everything paperwork-wise to the Wimbledon office on the Thursday (with my retention certificate), they sent it to Swansea as they couldn't do anything other than collate and the necessary to get my plates made up arrived on Saturday!

That was exactly two years ago... dunno what it's like now.
