I'm looking for something to replace my 1 Series BMW.
I keep looking at performance saloons and estates that would fit the bill, but then I keep having a nagging question about Range Rovers or RR Sports.

Budget isn't high but could get me a 2005 4.2 V8 with 100,000 on the clock (based on a one ad I've seen)

My thinking is rather than go for "sporty" why not go for relaxing. It'd do everything I need, large boot, relaxing luxury, loads of space for family.

So, why wouldn't I?

Is there an ideal model (for someone who isn't a fan of diesel)? Are petrols cheaper because no-one buys petrol Range Rovers?

Any advice gratefully received.

Budget isn't high....
^^^This is your reason why not!!

Just because they're now at a more affordable price, servicing and running costs havn't come down! Don't get me wrong, they are a fantastic car but if you're at all concerned about budget, walk away. wink

I should have been more specific shouldn't I.
My budget would be circa £15k, would your advice be to walk away from any RR at £15k?

Well im a big fan or rangerovers I've had 3 but all vogues not sports!! they are the best 4x4 on the market for comfort and looks but it does come at a cost!! My petrol v8 would ave 12-15 mpg... v8 diesel was mid-late 20s

Generally all have been very good only my last one cost me a few quid... the steering Colum motor's went which blew the seat switch and they cost just over a grand to replace and fit laugh and 2 weeks later the air compressor for the suspension went and that was another thousand or so... But even with these cost i'd still have another!

Find a nice one with good history and hopefully your on your way to a great vehicle!

No but do your homework (which you obviously are)... wink

Running costs can become expensive on these cars, just make sure you factor that all in. Tyres, servicing, etc...

As CL says, it's the running costs that kill these cars.
The base vehicle may get cheaper. The spares won't.

But it's just a Range Rover. As such, spares are plentiful and prices competitive.

I run a 6 1/2y old RR Sport which Ive had from new
Touch wood its been perfect with absolutely no issues

Since the RR warranty expired I have it serviced by a very good local indie who I trust to do a good job at a lot less cost than the local main dealer

If you have a tame indie nearby then go for it

Mine is a diesel V8
It does 30mpg on the motorway and 15 in town if I commute it - which I only do with severe weather and/or snow
A petrol would be a lot of fun however Id be scared of fuel costs smile

Cheers
