Photochromic sunglasses recommendations.

I've been thinking about buying a pair of these to cut down on switching lenses between clear and tinted plus I was caught out last week when I only had dark lenses on me and the sun went down

I understand they aren't perfect as the reaction takes time and they don't go perfectly clear and some don't seem to go particularly dark. I don't want to spend £100+ so are any worth buying at this price? They would be for riding my MTB if this makes any difference.

I have both colours in these cheap n cheerful glasses & i prefer them to my more expensive Oakley's tbh

This site was recommended on here in a prescription sunglasses thread. Not used them myself yet, but plan to once I've had my eyes tested for a new prescription.

You can get nonprescription lenses too, in various brands of transition type.


ETA. Ignore this, that Ribble set looks like bargain central.

I had some fairly cheap (£40) Endura ones that were pretty disappointing. Didn't go clear enough for in between the trees and took a few seconds so when you cam out of the gloom you'd be squinting.

Decided to splurge on some Oakley Radars and they have been some of the been money I've spent on mountain biking. They go clear enough to use at night and dark enough for full sun and do so quickly. Had them for a couple of years now and wear them every ride.

Well above £100 but IMHO well worth it.

What's not to like.

Bought a pair after BCM posted about them two or three few months ago and have worn them on every ride since. My costly Rudy Project fixed tints never get a look in.

They seem to cope with bright and dull days equally well. Went into a tunnel on sunny day the other week and they cleared within a few seconds. No doubt there are pairs that perform even better for much more money but I'm very happy with these, especially considering how little they cost.

My eyes are sensitive to sun, I wear the Ribble ones, as posted here, following a recommendation on here.

Great glasses, wear them all year round, bar sunny days. Great in evenings or overcast dull days. When it gets very bright they aren't dark enough for me, but for the usual dross dull cloudy days the UK has they are great.

Bought photochromic lenses (transitions) for my oakleys. Great 90% of the time, but they don't go dark enough for properly bright days IMHO.

Thanks for all the pointers. It's difficult to see past (no pun intended) the Ribble glasses at that price.

.....Just to add my bit, I brought the ribbles glasses a couple of months ago and can confirm they are superb value for money.
I use them for both MTB and road riding and recommend them!

I ordered a pair of the Ribble glasses and have been using them for the last two days. Very happy with them so far, good construction and the lenses seem to work well. The fit is very good too as there is nothing more annoying to me than a pair of sunglasses that bounce around when the going gets rough.

They are good aren't they , especially at theta price too,
