I’ve noticed some early 348’s have what look like black plastic side skirts, front splitters and rear valances, whereas most others are colour coded. IMHO the colour coded ones look much better with the others looking quite dated.

Was the colour coding always a factory option or did Ferrari start to supply it as a standard finish at some point in the car’s lifetime?

The TBs and TSs had the black lower trims. When the GTBs and GTSs and Spiders were launched the factory colour coded the trim/valances.

However, a lot of TB and TS owners have them painted in the newer style.
