I'm Converted - 1 x 10 set up. New Chain + Old Cassette = No

I completed the conversion of my 1x10 set up on my 29er last night and took it for its first run. The Groupset on the bike was just shy of 2k miles old, I replaced the front chain ring with a new 34t Narrow wide and thought I'd replace the chain to, big mistake, the new chain on the old cassette was jumping like anything.

I'm doing an XC Time Trial tomorrow night so need a solution, do I;

1. Put the old chain back on - Assuming this is more bedded to the cassette and the new Chainring will be more forgiving.
2. Try and find a new Cassette today, probably only chance of that will be Halfords and their stock/prices might not be what I want/need
3. I have a mates bike in my Garage with a 1-200 mile old Shimano cassette on it, do I "borrow" that - my Groupset is SRAM but assume they'd be compatible.

I was slowly replacing the whole Groupset, so the cassette was the next item on the list, I may just need it sooner than later.

Oh, my local halfords happen to have stock of one of them - it's not listed as SLX but is the CS-HG81 so assuming be the same?

Will this work ok with a Sram chain / rear mech?

As far as I know, they're interchangeable. I have a Shimano 9sp cassette with SRAM X5 derailleur and god knows what chain and it works OK.

Yes, Shimano and SRAM chains and cassettes work together. Enjoy your quiet easily cleaned less trouble drivetrain and half kilo saving

Just ditch all the gears and go single speed...

I'd consider XT if you're riding XC as you can add a 40/42 extender and remove 17t then change to 34 up front giving you more range.

BTW If you get SLX and you're bothered by weight, the only difference to XT is in the lock ring.

The weight of my bike is the last thing I need to be worrying about!

I've gone for the SLX cassette, they were adamant that they wouldn't match internet prices (I've double checked and the should) I got my BC discount though so only a couple of £ out of pocket.

I've just gone 1x10 on my AM bike and I was struggling on some of the steeper inclines due to having a 36t Chain ring - I didn't want to go smaller as it's essentially a DH bike that gets pushed up/uplifted for 90% of my riding

I might need to stick an enormous sprocket on the rear to tackle the big climbs for that 10% when I do go out pedalling though.

All sorted - new cassette, new chain (back on), new gear cable - feels like new again, shifts nicely with no jumping.

I've always wanted a bay window or splittie. Best I could do was this T25 with a 2.5 Subaru Legacy motor in the back.



Did a similar trip, France, Switzerland, Italy in 2012. Would have loved to keep it but had other plans.
Never sell yours. You'd regret it.

Nice, guess that's a little quicker than our 1600 TP engine!

We did Holland, Germany, Czech Rep, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Austria, Italy, France, Germany, Holland (again), Belgium - home. It was slow going but we had 5months to do it

Wow! That's an epic trip. Well done.

We didn't even have 5 weeks. I'd love to hit the road for that long. We've said we will definitely do it again in a few years.

Regarding speed, that's exactly why I hunted for a Subaru engined one but to be honest it still had the original gearbox which determines speed anyway, plus the shape of it meant it still didn't like being pushed through the air at much more than 80mph. Would do over 100mph but you got the feeling the gearbox wasn't having fun.

Hopefully a bay window next time so we have the proper look.

damn, where do you ride? My proper DH bike has a 32 tooth chainring and I've never run out of gears

Nowhere out of the ordinary, Aston Hill, Stile Cop, Woburn, Kinver Freeride, Bike Park Wales. I have a major fear of coming up short on the big gap jumps so more speed is the order of the day!

(however I do usually completely overshoot the landing transition)

fair enough, maybe it's just that my little legs mean i pedal faster than most
