Audi A4 Avant 2.0T (B7) - which engine is reliable?
Discussion
I'll looking at picking up a B7 Audi A4 Avant 2.0T TFSI (circa 2005-2008) for family duties.
Can someone advise which 2.0T TFSI petrol variant doesn't suffer from oil issues?
I think the 197bhp engine appears to be more reliable than the later 217bhp engine.
Is that correct?
If so when was the last 197bhp engine produced?

It did. Only serious issue with the B7 TFSI engines is/was HPFP cam/follower wear. As long as cambelt intervals are kept to and decent quality oil used the only issues you'll ever see as PCV and DV failures, neither of which will strand you.The 217 is in the DTM version and other Special Editions AFAIK. It's basically a remapped version of various Longitudinal 2.0T belt cam engines from the other A4s. I don't think there are any fundamental differences in hardware but I'm sure one Dr G can confirm.

Seems clear the 2.0T TFSI on B7's are good, but steer clear of B8's.

Yeah, they're fine.
20k oil change intervals are silly, however
The oil had been changed every 10k on mine and I've done the same. I changed the HPFP follower when I bought the car at 75k, though it wasn't showing any signs of wear. A downside on the TFSI engine is they can sound noisy at idle. 20k oil change intervals are silly, however

Yes, they sound like a bag of spaners at low speeds. Not particually fuel efficient either, however as an alround package I was very please! The engine also responds very well to performace software ; )
I've toyed with having mine mapped but don't fancy tempting fate with 95k on the original clutch and flywheel on a quattro.blade7 said:

There's quite a few people on Audi-Sport forums who've had oil consumption issues with the B7's as well. A couple have had rebuild foc under warranty or goodwill from Audi dealers.I find that mine uses a bit when it's used for short stop/start journeys but nothing major.

If its helps - in the 217bhp version engine code BUL had some engine revisions & altered compression ratio, responds better to remaps than stnd. In respect to Cam follower wear BUL engines have modified cam lobe set up so in theory shouldn't see similar issues.
All 2.0t are noisy at tickover/idle due to direct injection, I do have to contradict other post as I find mine very economical (better than my 3.0 TDI) even when driven spiritedly for the power available its a good all round package & great fun, reliable over 4 years apart from Coil pack recall - so I'm hanging on to mine.

Thanks all.
What's the mileage on people's 2.0T's (most for sale seem to be 60k miles+)?
Mine's a 2005 2.0 TFSI avant on 81k. Uses a bit of oil, about a litre over 10000 miles. I replaced the cam follower when I bought it a year ago on 70000 miles just for piece of mind - easy to DIY following the guides on line. Thermostat needed doing too which I also DIYed. All in all very happy with mine so far touch wood!
Mine's a little over 88k. As mentioned before, it burns a bit of oil, but I average circa 32-34mpg in mixed driving. It's suffered from some of the minor niggles that Mk5 platform TFSI cars can over the years (PCV, diverter valve, CV boots, AC compressor failure) but has generally been pretty reliable.

...to be fair it averages high 30s. I've filled up with Sainsburys Super Plus and it has improved the performance and economy over standard petrol.

Not fuel efficient? This was my run home one night this week:
