Some advise appreciated please!

I'd really like to get one of the newly tweaked Boxsters, but the waiting list is still 6/9 months (apparantly). I'm considering buying a Boxster S now, putting myself on the waiting list for a new one and changing in 6/9 months time.

Thing is, how much value do you think the car will loose over the 6/9 months I'd have to wait? I've been offered a nearly new 2001 car for about 38K (from main dealer with decent options) and I've also been offered a brand new cancelled order Boxster for 44K (big spec).

How much do you think the main dealer would offer in 6/9 months time?

Has anyone had any luck trying to sell such expensive cars privately?

I'm afraid asking how much a car will be worth in the future is a question we'd all like to know.

Have the OPC given an indication on the basis of your likely mileage?

Ref selling valuable cars direct to the public. No chance, wouldn't want strangers coming to my home, I'd also be unsure how to deal with fraudsters.

Well...if I were you I'd order the new car and wait.

If you get your order in now then it will turn up for next year's "season". Once the new model has turned up in numbers I would expect that the outgoing model will lose trade-in value, although perhaps not dramatically, but certainly worse than if it was current.

This is why I'm taking delivery of my 2003MY 'S' as early as possible in the production run.

For a relatively new car the biggest cost is dealer margin. They will be factoring in a complete valet, service and a machine polish of the paintwork and then the profit they want to make on the deal. I should think this will be about 6K. Clearly this is a smaller proportion of the overall cost of upgrade if the car you are trading in is older.

For a 6/9 month old car you will pay LIST PRICE. Similarly for a cancelled order. If you are rid in 6 months or so you will probably sell for list price LESS DEALER MARGIN. Now...since they will be making a profit on the new car they might be prepared to give some of that up to sweeten the deal....

They will give an indication of likely future value when you order your new car - but it is NOT binding until they make an offer about a month prior to delivery...

I'll let you know how I get on if you like so you'll know what to expect.

If your planning on ordering the new 'S' from the same dealer that has the boxster you want now, ask the question.

"If I buy this one now, and place an order for a new one, what will you give for it when the new one arrives, assuming I do X miles, service it with you and keep it in top condition"

Hope you don't mind me asking guys (and sticking my onw spanner into the works) but just how does a Boxster S stack up against the 996 C2/C4...... especially as regards grunt!

A Boxter S flew past me on the M40 today (I was in my Rover!) and looked very nippy indeed. I would have to have really stoked the 964RS to catch it up.

Autocar will have the figures for it, but I'm sure that in the real world the S offers almost 996 performance.

Thanks very much for the comments about purchasing, all good advise. Please do let me know how you get on Don. I will indeed ask the dealer for an indicative price against a new one in 6/9 months.
Cheers.

In the "real world" the 'S' has all the power you could want. Near TVR levels of performance, really.

It is not *quite* as fast. If this matters to you then a 996 is the way to go.

It has, however, better handling (supposedly - although they both stick to the road like s**t to a blanket) which is to die for.

On a track...the 996s flew past me. Some of that was the driver... but on a straight the C2 was definitely quicker. On paper its C2 - 5.2s, 'S' - 5.9. There is a difference...but will you notice it?

I have been dowe the same road. Wanted a Boxster and thought it best to wait until the new one is out, went to Dick Lovetts in Bristol and placed my order. I was told that my car will be here next February!! (* months after the order) So I thought the same as you, buy a used one from them and then sell it back when the new one is here.
Well after some discussion it worked out that I would lose about 6 grand over the 7 months. So almost a grand a month!!!!
Better off buying a P reg 2.5 for 22grand and then resell it nearer the date. I decided to just wait and watch all the boxsters on the M4 every day with the hoods down and just dream and wait and wait and wait!!!
