Events over the past week have possibly resulted in an offer being made for my 996 GT3RS that could see me then getting into a 997 GT3RS 4.0, which I always said to myself would be the only car I'd consider ever moving my 996 on for.
Now that there is a distinct possibility I'm torn between keeping my 996 and jumping into the 997 as it's a LHD.
I drove a 4.0 at silverstone and was blown away by the cars handling, felt like it moved the game on somewhat but I'm still not 100% sure I'd be making the right choice.
Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated as hair is being pulled out at a rate of speed...

Well...as I am sure you know, there are no right or wrong answers to this one.
Personally I believe both these variants are the two bookends and standout models from a great stable.
It is a tricky question.
...one is amazing because of its simplicity, high level of feedback, total connection from head to limb tips to controls to road surface.
...whilst the other has a lot of developments and bits which collectively make for the pinnacle of the mezger range
I think it depends on why you want it and where/how you use it. For example:
- Investment asset: Both should be promising and both are at recent price peaks. Both are extremely rare when compared to other variants. 4.0RS has broader appeal whilst 6RS has a cult following
- GT type of Road use: 4.0 RS does this much better with creature comforts
- Track use: Both are great though I would rate the 6RS a little higher personally
- Glamour driving/attention seeking: The 4.0 RS certainly trumps here
...and then there is affordability...as in the 4.0 RS is of course dearer to buy, dearer to fix if something breaks (mechanically or accident), dearer to insure, dearer standing costs (i.e. trackers, warranty, insurance)...some of this can dampen how enthusiastically its driven (depending on your risk appetite and financial situation)

997 GT3 RS 4.0 only 600 WW (29 RHD)
So if you have a RHD 996.2 RS, it's going to be rarer than a LHD 997 GT3 RS 4.0.
Both cars are fantastic, seems the 996 RS is more focused and hardcore, where the RS 4.0 is the last of its type.
I'd probably stick with what you've got. You know it, it's RHD, focused and rare.

If you could get the 4.0 without selling up the 6RS great as it really is a terrific car (and that engine!) but I personally wouldn't make the switch if I were you if it meant selling the 6RS. The only caveat I suppose is if you wanted the car to use mainly as a road car...
The 6RS represents the type of car Porsche will never make again to a considerably greater extent than the 4.0 (which is the last of it's type more in name than in spirit vs the 6RS) and is the closest road car that Porsche have sold to the motorsport cup car.

Cars aside, how are you driving a LHD? I owned a LHD Porsche years ago and in LHD the aircooled was supposed to be a better drive.
Problem was, I just wasn't keen on holding the wheel with the left and changing with the right. I preferred my stronger (even though I'm left handed) right hand holding the wheel, I also prefer the gearchange where top gears are towards rather than away from you.

Agreed this is why they have doubled in value over the last 18months. Lets not forget however they were not wanted up until this point.If the music stops it'll be the 1st RS that gets dumped IMO

If one is so attached to a 996RS compared to a 997, I'd say it is fairly clear that he is more focused on the task behind the wheel and stick rather than shaving a few more second of his ringlaps.Great reply from LaSource which for me sums everything up very well, but I'd just add to that by saying basically life's too short to be 'stuck' with the same car for too long; no matter how good it is. Your opening sentence states that a 997 4.0 RS is the only car you'd consider changing for, so if you've owned and enjoyed your 6RS for a decent length of time (however long that is) than move on before its too late and they go completely out of reach financially and/or become too precious to use.
