Caterham Mirrors
Discussion
Maybe this is just me but I find the Caterham door mounted mirrors pretty useless.
I have only owned the car for a few days and just finished a track evening at brands.
I found the mirrors to be basically useless. The vibration through them at speed and the wind means I can barely tell if there is a car behind me.
Is there an alternative ? Aeroscreen and firmer mounted mirrors ?

They seem to pop up on ebay fairly often too.
A word of warning, they're useless without a helmet as they don't exactly do a great job of deflecting the air, but on a trackday when I'm wearing a helmet already I find them fine.

My Caterham had the SVA mirrors mounted on the windscreen stanchion. Getting in and out was slightly hindered, but I'm a slim chap so it wasn't too big a deal. However passengers were forever knocking the mirror, which was a PITA.
Also the mirror itself is rubbish and rotational adjustment is made via a tiny grub screw. Consequently it was always vibrating out of position as the clamping method just doesn't have enough bite to hold the mirrors securely.

I've now replaced the SVA mirrors with some SPA items that are mounted, via a small bracket, to the lower door hinge on the screen stanchion. The mirrors are of a far better quality and have stayed in exactly the same position as when first fitted. As an added bonus, the doors now open further too.

Sorry to jump into this thread, but I'm on the cusp of buying my first 7 and the mirror thing is bothering me too. I'd like to run without doors on occasionally, but would it make the car 'illegal' if I then had no wing mirrors? Logic sugests not, as vans have to interior RVM. I imaging they only need to be there for MOTs?

Not to ruin your fun, but a windscreen and no doors (without a helmet) is a horrible experience. Too much air turbulence which sucks out the air from the car, making it hard to breathe above 40mph and is really quite painful on the right ear!If you had an aeroscreen though you'd mount the mirrors directly to that.

And a blanking plastic bolt in the remaining hole.

A word of warning, that's not strictly true http://www.caterhamparts.co.uk/product.php?id_prod...

They are useless as they come, but if you bend the bottom in (using a pan of boiling water) so they stick out a lot more then they are very effective, even without a helmet

I did that and still found them terrible without a helmet

That looks like a great solution. Can you tell me what mirrors they are ? Regarding the brackets did you buy them or make them up yourself ?
Cheers
These are the mirrors: https://www.meteormotorsport.com/shop/caterham/spa...Cheers
Brackets were part of a Blatchat group buy.
Also to echo Andy's (Framerate) comments, driving with the windscreen but no doors is not a pleasant experience. If you want to do that, go Aeroscreened (which is a whole new experience!).

Thanks, I'm going to use the screen and doors for road use and get an aeroscreen for trackdays.I guess i'll make up some brackets unless someone has a set hanging around they are happy to sell.
