Professor Sid Watkins, Formula One's medical chief, is to retire from his post with immediate effect.
The 76-year-old, known as 'Prof', will be replaced by his assistant Gary Hartstein, an associate professor of anaesthesiology and emergency medicine.
Max Mosley, president of motorsport's governing body the FIA said: "Sid has made a unique contribution to improving safety throughout motorsport."
Watkins will become president of the new Institute for Motor Sport Safety.
Thankfully he is still involved in safety
