I've recently moved from London to the West Coast of Scotland. Now that I am commuting daily by train to Glasgow, I can indulge in a car that's more for pleasure than everyday transport. So I am thinking about replacing my 3 year old BMW 540i Touring. My list includes 993 Porsche, M3 cabrio, S4 convertible, and the Maserati coupe (I need occasional 4 seats). The 4.2 cars are available for under £40K from the Edinburgh official dealer.

I don't expect to be doing more than 5-6000 miles a year. I don't have a garage so the car must live outside all year. The big question is what the worst-case running costs and unreliability might be, as I've got used to these being minimal the last few years. Also - is the manual gearbox the best option, both for driving and for long-term maintenance? All advice much appreciated, thanks.

The 4200 is not unreliable, I don't know anyone whos had big problems with them at all. The only potential downside (and even this is only anecdotal) is that you only "suposedly" get 20-25,000 miles out if a clutch on the Cambiocorsa versions.

I've had mine (a 2002 model) for 7 months and 6200 miles and absolutely nothing has gone wrong at all.

It is a fabulous looking very quick and extremly classy machine.

Buy one!

Had mine since October(o2/Coupe CC) driven about 2K miles, it lives outside on the drive and i have had no problems at all. It's great driving something with integrity that's very quick, but is still a rare sight on the road. As for the gearbox I am very happy with the CC even though i have only ever really driven manual car's before this but opinions vary.
