So this morning dropped my 8 year old at school and as I indicated and drove off the stalk broke. When indicating right the stalk has to be held in position and indicating left the stalk clicks into position but does not cancel after the turn.

Dispite only doing about 4,000 miles a year this is the third time this has happened in the last six years and the problem is that you have to buy a new unit which mine has 3 stalks as I have the On board computer but not cruise control.

These cannot be repaired as I believe they are a sealed unit and new they are about £260 new plus fitting but each time I have sourced second hand for about £120 and £50 fitting. This current one lasted 15 months.

Do I have any other options but to buy another replacement or sell the car !!!

I think the problem is that you are buying a worn second hand component. Same part on the Boxster and others advocate new only.

Yes I know the part is shared with the Boxster which should not be a problem and the second hand ones that I have bought have been from a good independent Porsche garage that have been taken off a 996 as the owner added cruise control so needed a 4 stalk unit.

These indicator units/stalks should last forever as I have never had any issues with any other cars I have owned and I even have a car built in 1973 and it still has the original indicator stalks.

Its the same with batteries as they never last more than four and a half years but luckily has not cost me anything as I buy a battery from Halfords with a 5 year warranty and the last two I had replaced free of charge and on the last one even had £20 cash back that made me feel a bit guilty.

My Boxster one did it at the end of last year. I bought a new stalk system but was told the one with cruise is cheaper, by quite a margin. So have bought that & will get Wrightune to add Cruise to the Boxster when I get a minute.

Yes I did notice that the 4 stalk with cruise was about £100 cheaper than the 3 stalk.I will ring my Porsche Indy and see what they charge for adding cruise if they can or perhaps use the 4 stalk but dont wire in cruise.

I had the indicator stalk assembly replaced on both my previous 996T auto and current 996T manual. The latest one was replaced by a new unit last month and the hold, release and manually cancelling action feel much smoother and more robust.

I think Porsche have revised / improved this part during its production life.
