Last time I looked you could get 2 pairs of ankle socks in Sports Direct for £4 - Karrimor branded with a little extra padding where it's needed - look in the running section. I use them for both running and cycling and they are just as comfy and last just as well as anything else I've tried, I've got about 20 pairs now! £10+ for a pair of socks just ain't necessary IMO.
Random freebies are a good sock, value for money wise 
I have two pairs of unworn 'Cycling Weekly' socks in my "bike stuff box" waiting for the summer. Then there's the 'Wiggle' socks that were also free on the front of a cycling magazine, and a pair of 'Scott' socks which were also a freebie.
The ones currently on my feet are Aldi/Lidl "biking" socks with additional padding at various places, including the upper part of the foot that sits against the tongue of the shoe.
The only proper "Cycling Socks" I've bought otherwise have been from SockGuy... http://www.sockguy.com/
...I bought them via CRC and Wiggle, and only because I liked the designs (1 x 'Crash Test Dummy' and 2 x 'Wales National Flag'). I tend to only wear those when I'm not wearing long pants or overshoes, so that the design (on the 'cuff') can be seen...

You may as well speak to a wall.Shopping for bike stuff seems as much a hobby for some people as the cycling itself.
In the winter I use my wife's old ski socks. She has four pairs and they are each over 10 years old and still going strong. I do have a pair of Wolly Bollies (SP??) that were bought for me and they are really good when it gets sub zero, but I've only used them a few times.
In summer I use Tesco sports socks. I do have some nice DHB cycling socks, but I can never find them when I need them, so I always just throw on the tesco socks. Its just one area of cycling that I've never spent money on.
