After deciding I need I become more sensible with cars I then have a sudden change of heart when I saw the odd 996 Carrera 4 fall into my price range (under £10,000).
Are they any good? Will these be moneypits?
My old man pointed out that nobody starts a happy story with "So I bought this cheap Porsche".
I deal with Hartech through work and am intrigued by their fixed monthly price servicing arrangements too.

Will this cheap Porsche cripple me financially?

There is a good blog here,

http://www.project3000.co.uk/category/911/

How handy are you at doing your own spannering? I am a novice but I find the 911 one of the easiest cars I've ever worked on. It's the quality of the engineering.

Buy one someone else has invested in and keep on top of preventative maintenance.

Ah that sounds good! I'm probably more of a novice level too but my old man is a little more handy.

I have a 10k C4.

Are they any good? Yes they are bloody good imo.
Will it cripple you financially? If the engine goes bang, it's a 10k bill, obviously a lot on a 10k car. If it doesn't, put aside £1500 a year to keep it going properly.

I'd recommend decent history and a thorough PPI

I bought my C2 3.4 manual in 2012 for 8,900 Pounds. The best money I have ever spent. I will never sell it and can't wait to go back to the UK to drive it every day again (currently on 120,000 miles).

Only mods from my side
- New IMS bearing (without seal)
- Hartech-suggested thermostat
- clean oil every 10k.

and of course, warm it up by driving for 15 minutes and then drive it like stolen. Amazing car.

edited for lack of GBP key on Singaporean keyboard smile

..or you sell it on with engine woes for around £6k, providing its otherwise a good car, so worst case you'll only lose a few thousand
That's the beauty of the economics of these things.
