Hi Guys,

This is my first post on here and would really appreciate your input.

I have a 997.2 c2s which I use every day and like most of you feel that the exhaust note is poor. Unfortunately I do not have the PSE but I do have sport chrono. I have been looking at the Sherkwerks X-Pipes as the feedback on here and the YouTube clips sound like what I am looking for ....

The question I have is that without the PSE I assume I can not change the level of the engine note from normal to loud? What is the best way to achieve a better sound and ideally the ability to have a normal and a sport setting linked to the sport button? Do I need to buy PSE first or is there another option?

I need to have a normal mode as I often leave home at 5am and do not want to waken the entire street?

Thanks for all input.

Cheers, NeilRC2S

The beauty of the Gundo Hack mod is that it isn't that much louder on startup/low revs (so won't annoy neigbours).

You can also choose from a range of loudnesses' by opting for different sizes 1" 1.5" 1.75" 2", so you can choose something that is a happy medium to live with all of the time.

Here's a clip of a 1.75" and one of a 2". For comparison, the standard 996 PSE is 1" (IIRC)

To do a switchable system (properly) could potentially cost you nearly 10% of the value of the car.

You should be able to get PSE retrofitted for no more than £2400. If you can get them to order PSE without the centre silencer, you'd save some money. Then fit the Sharkwerks.

It'll have a separate switch in the car. It's quiet enough for leaving early, but sounds good when open. Standard PSE is a bit lacking on the 997.2.

Thanks Monthefish they both sound very good, much more like the noise you would expect.

I take it once they are installed they are permanent with no adjustment etc...?

Thanks for your input.

No probs.

Yes, sounds a lot more like a 911 should.

Once it's done, it's not adjustable/switchable, but its a proven mod (and could probably be reversible if it was absolutely necesarry). If you are concerned about excess noise, the 1" pipe would probably fit the bill.

Bear in mind the extra silencer on the Gen 2 cars. It won't sound like a Gen 1 example.

Yep, actually the gundo hack isn't proven on Gen 2 cars at all - it'll make no difference.

Look up Innotech IPE for the 997.2 on Youtube and prepare to be impressed. It's cheaper than a PSE and Sharwerks. However, if you already had a PSE then the Sharkwerks is a no brainer.

Thanks Hondansx, the clips on YouTube sound great. Do you have any first hand experience of the Ipe system or of any of the listed dealers?

Cheers.

Does anyone have any experience of fitting the Sharkwerks X Pipes without a PSE just the standard stock system. The Sharkwerks project car I think has that set up and sounds pretty good but maybe not as aggressive as the IPE Innotech system.

Lots of talk about the sound of the Sharkwerks on a non-PSE 997.2 in the below post but so far no sound clips or direct feedback from a UK owner with the Sharkwerks on a non PSE equipped car....
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

We have supplied over 20 Sharkwerks 997.2 upgrades (mostly for GTS and other PSE equipped cars) but we have supplied at least 1 for a non PSE car and videos were promised. I'm sure they will be posted once available. We currently have 3 x 997.2 Sharkwerks systems in stock here in the UK.

There was plenty of feedback from myself about the sound of the Sharkwerks on a non-PSE 997.2 on the main Sharkwerks bypass thread (together with feedback about other exhaust combos I've tried and rejected). In short, it sounds OK, but it's not quite there - if that makes any sense.

If you don't want the expense of fitting the full PSE (stupid money for a couple of large tins with valves) and/or you want to do the installation yourself and/or you don't want the interior of your car torn apart to fit the switch, then look at the GT Exhaust from Gert Carnewal (www.carnewal.be).

Gert has the standard Porsche side silencers modified internally to give a much more rounded, deeper and more purposeful sound that still retains its essential 'Porsche-ness'. Amazingly, there's no visible evidence the silencers have ever been modified, so it's dealer proof too!

I've had the Sharkwerks/Carnewal combo fitted on my 2010 997S.2 PDK for over 4 years now and can report as follows:

There's absolutely no resonance from the Sharkwerks/Carnewal combo at all - in fact it's quieter in the cabin at cruise than the standard exhaust setup (as an annoying resonance in the standard system that's apparent in 7th gear at motorway speeds is gone). Otherwise, the sound is perfectly adjustable with your right foot and is never over-the-top or overly attention-seeking. Just a purposeful, powerful, Porsche-appropriate, perfectly-loud-enough (louder than PSE at full chat) smile-inducing setup that gives the car back all the character Porsche tried to take out. All for about half the price of PSE.

When you come to sell the car, just remove the Sharkwerks centre-pipe and replace with the standard centre silencer. The dealer won't know the side cans are modified by looking at them and the difference in sound is minimal (compared to the standard, unmodified items) when the normal centre silencer is refitted.
