996 advise please
Discussion
Hi there, I'm looking at a '98 996 carrera 2 which suffered IMS failure in 2011 and had it replaced by a specialist independent dealer. The part number on the invoice is 996 105 901 00' abit of searching appears to show that this is a duel row IMS genuine part. Can anyone tell me is this part is likely to be more reliable than the part originally fitted to the engine in '98. Am I right in saying that the IMS was modified/superseded over time. Would it be up to standered against the modified non genuine parts now available through popular specialists?
Do the gearboxes stand the test of time well? (Clutch was changed with IMS)
Is it a straight swap to fit a later 3 spoke steering wheel?
Thanks for any opinions and input.
Kind regards.

Im probably wrong but I've read that the earlier 996 3.4 engine is more reliable than the 3.6 in terms of bearing failure???

Dual row bearing is normal for these older cars. Replacement one is no less likely to fail.
It must have had quite a rebuild after the IMS bearing failed. That should help.
Depends if the engine failed or not. My IMS bearing was picked up as noisy and then changed, the rest of the engine hasn't been touched. It must have had quite a rebuild after the IMS bearing failed. That should help.
