Anyone 'dabble' in this kind of activity? A few of us at work are looking into it as a more interesting way to loose money.
Of course all the websites are full of biased information and I know if I come here I won't get that.

Aren't all shares 'penny shares' nowadays?
I think you overpaid IT contractors should stop moaning and sympathise with us poverty stricken city types.

Forget it - about as exciting as pulling the legs off spiders.

Get yer monkey cheque book out and buy some proper shares.

We tried a share syndicate at work a few years back which only looked at penny shares. We didn't lose anything, but we didn't gain anything either - very boring.

I bought a load of "penny shares" a few years ago in a company called Rage Software (RGE I think) on the tip of a mate "in the know" for about 6p each they rocketted to a peak of about 80p before bombing again to where they stand today at a couple of pence (can't even be arsed to check exact price) it was fun because it only involved a "small" ish amount of money but unless you've got the time or inclination to really keep a good track on things don't bother and leave it to those who get paid well into six figures doing so.

City Equities (www.cityequities.com) is meant to be one of the more respectable penny shares companies.

I tend to invest in beer and fast cars myself - rubbish return on investment, but fun losing your money in this way!

I have dabbled a little in the penny shares. Bought into a company called Monticello a while back, I got in at 40p and they eventually got up to £2.00! It's funny how greed takes over because you always end up hanging on. In the end they got suspended and are now under investigation by the DTI (I think). Somebody made a real killing on them, not me though! If you are really interested try www.citybull.co.uk they are very helpful. Also if you are really into high risk penny shares have a look at www.ofex.com be warned though as not many of these take off. There is also a guide on starting a share club but I cannot remember who makes it, will check tonight and let you know.

The final tip is never play with cash that you cannot afford to lose, you might even be better off putting it on a horse on betting on the FTSE going up or down.

Enjoy

Cheers Nik, if you could find the info that would be great.
I take on board all the comments, I don't expect to be driving a Speed 12 by Christmas thats for sure!

High risk penny shares!? Interesting thought.

Rage are in deep do-do. They've shut down one of their studios, and they're relying on David Beckham soccer on Playstation 2 to make some money. If this bombs like the PC one did, the banks will probably close it down.

How do I know? I work in the industry.

It came back to me in a blinding flash of light!

www.proshare.org/

They do an investment club manual bit steep @ £30 but contains all you need to know about forming a club.

There you go, then: if you want a way to make money, produce a manual about how to make money. Then flog it to gullible punters, who will make about £20 using the sh1tty tips you give them and wonder why they are £10 worse off than when they started.

The whole game went arse over t*t following The Financial Services Act of 1986.
This took all the fun out of brokering because all of a sudden insider trading was considered the greatest evil since Black Lace's seminal 'Aggadoo.'
Which is a bit odd when you consider that the impetus for the stock market only really got going during the 1700s, when questionably attired gents of the day would alight to their nearest coffee shop and discuss Archie Campbell's next expedition to the Indies for a bit of a flutter on some dodgy looking beans - and would you care for a punt, 'cos there might be a bit of an earner in it, Guv, know wot oi meenz?
Hardly transparency of info for the great unwashed, eh?
But what do you or I know? Nanny knows best.

I did a bit of Penny Share dealing in the early eighties, when I was working for a company affiliated to a stockbroker - I got the deals done for a knock-down commission. Never made a fortune, but it was fun in a "fiver on the lottery" sort of way.

On the whole though I think it works something like this:

You subscribe to a Penny Share Guide which gives hot tips monthly/weekly/whatever.
So do thousands of others.
The publishers buy some low value shares then recommend them as a hot tip.
You buy some.
So do thousands of others.
The price goes up (hey, surprise!).
The publishers probably pre-sold at a set price, and net a very tidy profit.
If you're lucky you sell before the tide turns and net a nice profit also.
The cycle repeats.

Better than working, for the guys doing the publishing.

Call me a cynic ...

Actually this reminds me ....

one of the last penny shares I bought was in a no-mark oil company. I bought £400 at about 2p a share I think it was - I still have the paperwork somewhere. They did bugger all for years, and I forgot about them.

Some years later I came across the paperwork, and decided to check how they were doing. Worth about the same as I'd paid. Out of interest I did a 10-year price check, and was gutted to discover that for about a week a few years earlier the share price had climbed to £15-odd a share - the company was rumoured to have struck new oil reserves in the Irish Sea.

What a window of opportunity to have missed!

Penny shares can are radioactive and should be handled with extreme caution. Be prepared to lose everything you invest, and expect extremely high transaction costs as a proportion of the value invested.

The market is not at all transparent. Not many analysts tracking the companies, not many professional investors in the market to arbitrage away silly prices, sod all liquidity. The market is driven by rumours, i.e. either inside info or people pretending they've got it. Tips are regularly leaked into the market to smack the price around.

With rare exception, you'll only make money in these things if there is a bigger fool in the market. Great fun, but about as risky as it gets in equity.

Thanks for the answers guys - I have to say pretty much the reaction I'd expected but it's good to hear them for real.
To sum up though, good for a laugh if you can afford to loose the cash?
