Which chain oil/lube do I use, wet or dry?

I will mostly be riding during dry weather, but I also don’t want the pain of oil dripping everywhere.

It is for my Cyclocross bike.

Neither will have oil dripping everywhere.

Dry is 'nicer' in that it attracts less crud but it will also get washed away after riding through a few puddles.

ok thanks. I have always used wet, wasnt aware until recently there was even a dry. I keep seeing reviews on each but just wanted to make sure I was using the right product for the right purpose.

It may be worth pointing out that you should be wiping excess lube off with a rag after applying. There shouldn't be enough excess that it could drip.

I use Finish Line dry generally, but these last few weeks with all the salt and water on the roads I've switched to a wet lube, again Finish Line. Cannot wait till the weather picks up and I can switch back to the dry stuff. Wet lube has that annoying property of being very sticky and leaves everything covered in black grime, especially if you give yourself a chainring tattoo on your leg, very annoying.

Big vote for wax-based lubes in the dry, lasts for ages and the dust/dirt sticks to the wax, balls up and drops off.

But, given how frequently I go through chains I would not listen to a word I said!!!!

If the chain goes I wont be too gutted. My bikes spec is pretty good but the chain lets things down, so if I need a new one it would be a good excuse to get an upgrade
