Mtb groupsets

Question for everyone on mtb groupsets...
Currently have xtr 3x9 : is it possible to go 1x10, or 2 x10 on my current chainset? I know I'll need a cassette, and shifters, and appropriate chain rings..Assume (be it rightly or wrongly) I could keep the mechs as the throw is determined by the shifter?

Yes to all, but the front mech might be a compromise, but you should be able to get it working ok. Front mechs are pretty cheap anyway.

You will need a new mech as well as it has a different pull ratio. Cheapest option is a group set so you'll get a front mech included.

But you won't need a front mech with 1x10. Thick thin chainring and clutch rear mech is all you need. Front mech and shifter gone!

sold old XTR, and new 10 speed are a diff ratio on the shifters / mech then?
Everyday is a school day - assumed you'd be able to mix and match : ie xt 10 speed shifter, with a 9 speed rear mech!

will get on the look out for deals like the sold out ones in CRC.

I quite fancy switching to 1 x 10 on my bike, as the front mech never seems to change when I want it, so I'm pretty much riding a 1 x 9 but with extra weight. What do all of the shifter options mean though? I thought it would be a case of I'll have a 10 speed XT shifter please...

Different mounting options

If you have recent shimano brakes you may have I spec B compatibility which is like avid match maker. I.e shifter bolts to brake lever mount

Just go 1x9 and use a 36 cassette and the extant middle ring + a cheap chain guide (I use a superstar one). Been running this set-up for years on my HT and there is little you can't climb on it. And I'm fat and old.

This. The fact your asking I would suggest you'd want bar mount.
