911 996 carrera 2 repairs / cylinder misfire info
Discussion
So folks, i was looking for this info online when it happened to me so thought I should share, if it should happen to you.
Have had the 911 996 C2 reg 99' for 8 months (100k miles). First car I've bought. Love it. Live in central London. It's never missed a Porsche / Porsche specialist service.
Driving along the car suddenly started running lumpy and wobbly, it's usually smooth which is the shtick of the flat-6, knocking coming from the right side, sounds like something is running right. Check Engine Light came on (oh s
t).
Pulled over, rang the AA. They came in 50mins (sweet) they didn't really know what was going on with the 911, dude said he'd never been called to one, he was a very nice / helpful guy though.
Diagnostic said Cylinder One Misfire. Woop. Now we know what's wrong with it. Got recovered to a Porsche specialist garage on a Saturday, they weren't open, no garages open
Car sat outside the garage Sunday. Googled around and found garage i'd been recovered too had a very bad rep online, crap. Googled about the problem of the cylinder misfire. Could be very bad, scored cylinder, IMS (though it didn't have any signs of that). Or could be be an 'okay' problem; spark plugs or coil packs.
Rang another Porsche Specialist (Porsche Tech London) on Monday and explained the problem, he said as long as it's just the CEL light that's on (no flashing red or anything else) it should be cool to drive it over (1 mile away) and they can look it over next day.
Today is that day, spoke to Andy and Steve, very nice guys. The coil pack on cylinder one was cracked, it was changed and it ran okay. The other 5 coils were also in the same state, so they recommended that they be changed them too as they're most likely going to go at any point. I said yup, go ahead.
Picked I it up today. Runs exactly the same as before the CEL came on. They also changed a drivers side bulb too. Runs smooth.
6 coil packs changed.
Bulb.
Engine and car checked out with pictures of what they found.
Cost: £446.66
In their check they also documented two leaky tensioner chain housings / things (my words not theirs) as they had a nice coating of oil on them, both sides of the engine, these are not effect the running right now, but if they go / fail they will. No oil on the floor just a coating on the engine.
Also a leaky RMS seal possibly. There is some oil in between the transmission and the engine. So we'll check that in April when I get it serviced.
There you have it. Some info.
