Tow bar for 911?
Discussion
Anybody know if anyone anywhere would fit a tow bar to a 911 (993 or 996).
I need to trailer a Caterham to track days, and my current car (M3 E46) won't accept any sort of third party tow bar as there ain't anything strong enough at the back end to bolt it to.
Would a 911 have the same limitations? Anybody ever seen a 911 trailering?
Thanks in advance
Steve

By the way Daz - I've a TT on order and wondered whether you thought the X50 was worth the dosh - I intend to go for it, but that's a lot of money for the extra bhp. Have you noticed a big hike in either torque or acceleration from other TT's (if you driven any)?
Other than my car which is manual and has the X50 upgrade I've never driven any other Porsche Turbos. ie from ordering my car aug 2001 to speccing it in jan 2002 the SINGLE turbo demonstrator in the country (Porsche GBs demonstrator) was not available for me to drive. impressive huh?
One of the salesmen at my OPC recently asked me exactly the same question as you've just asked because as at June this year they had only delivered two vehicles with the upgrade (Other upgrade orders in the pipeline but only two delivered). Of the two that have been delivered one car pootles about and my reputation at the garage was that I errrrrr didn't.
They had a customer who was speccing his car that week who asked if anyone at the garage had driven both. No one had. Quite disgusting really.
Steve, have you driven the standard one? Have a test drive booked?

PS1 Anyone else driven both versions, or can comment on the difference between driving a 408bhp and a 430bhp 993tt?
PS2 I see you don't have an email option on your profile and you live in the cotswolds, I'm not far away!

Daz,
Didn't realise my e mail address wasn't available from profile... it's supposed to be (?!)
SadGit@SadGit.net will work and the website www.SadGit.net is usually available, with e mail links from there.
I've driven a mates TT (not X50) but as you say, there are no demo cars available for comparing X50 with standard - and lets face it, you can only really get an idea of that sort of power hike on track or testing ground - so a test drive round the Oxford ring road seemed a bit pointless really.

Not much point in emailing then offering you a spin in mine because you really need to be able to do both cars down the same road/track back to back.

I have a better idea.
I will drive either your Caterham or Porsche to the track day, and follow you there.
Then you can drive both at the trackday.
Of course, it would help if you weren't in Scotland, Steve!
Cheers
Dom
PS I'm surprised that the E46 can't be tow-barred up. I thought an E46 estate would come with a caravan catcher as standard equipment.

Thanks for the thought though!

Highlands Spring and Autumn - Traffic Summer and Winter
Think it's just the M3 E46 that can't do tow bar - 'cos it's all fluff and carbon fibre at the back with a spaghetti of exhaust to complicate matters

So are you near Oxford then? I work there, live in Wycombe. The ring road is pretty shite for high speed stuff - too bumpy in many places and traffic density is rubbish.
I had a quick search for towbars for the 911, and they appear to have made them for the older 912/911 models, but not seen a modern one yet. They must be able to be custom made though - maybe that's what the jetski guy had?
Cheers

Ta for that - I phoned up the Porsche GB club (thought they might have an angle), but 1/ I'm not a member yet and 2/ Mentioning tow bars and Porsche in the same sentence is obviously tantamount to heresy.
I live up near Chippy - was in Somertown today at North Oxford Garage - I walk in there every few weeks and the service dept. just smile and say 'another set of brakes Mr Carter?' (sigh). Wish Beemer made proper stoppers like Porsche. (I'm on my 5th set - from 7 track days).
Ah well - probably my fault for driving like Attila the Hun (well he was Bavarian wasn't he? - or was that barbarian)
The good news is I get my AP racing brakes fitted in two weeks, so I'll be able to stop after more than 4 laps, and can throw away the brown cordroys and the cork.

Daz -
993TT
-408 = fast & exploitable;
-430 = no faster, just as exploitable, nice exhaust;
-450 = missed that one;
-470 = and that too;
-490 = exponential urge but less happy if cloudy...
Must say, I'd be fascinated to hear about this new upgrade pack on your 996TT - all that elctronic gizmology handling the extra oomph. If I hadn't spent so much on mine I'd be with you I suspect. Let me know!
