I'm looking at a car on ebay. The seller is private and has two cars for sale. Good feedback and reasonable quality adverts.

Now both these cars are effectively the same model and colour, but with a couple of years between them (in one photo you can even see the other car in the background).

The one i don't want checks out ok. Shown as tax'd, mot'd etc.

However the one I do want doesnt show up anywhere. The registration isn't recognised via the dvla, ask mid, price comparison websites, or any website for that matter which gives vehicle details off the registration. It's not (or at least doesnt appear to be) a private plate.

Normally i'd be a bit wary, but im even more wary about the fact he has two cars of the same model and colour for sale, and one doesnt seem to exist? We're talking £700 sheds here so im not spending a fortune, but could there be an innocent explanation?

could be a plate transfer as it will instantly disappear off the website once the transfer has gone through.

Pm me the link or reg and I can check for you if you like.

I'd be wary and unless it's a rare car, let it go and keep looking. When I was looking for my 6 I spotted a nice looking example at a private dealer in Windsor; did a quick check on the (standard) plate and it came back saying it was a blue ford Ka!

I moved on but I noticed it stayed up for sale on the dealer's website for a long time after.

cap doesn't recognise it but that doesn't mean its a problem.

Could still be a private transfer, ask the seller then report back or post the ad link?

I had this, the plate was the plate that came with the car and the private one was registered to the car until i bought it. Ask if its on a private plate.

That one doesn't come up on the DVLA database.

I'm having the exact same problem. The car I'm looking at shows up in the Transport for London ULEZ (emissions) vehicle checker but not on any car background checking service or DVLA.

I'd be really grateful for any help.

107 months for 1 post, top lurking!

That plate is definitely a private one, all prefix-style numbers under 20(?) are saved for private sales.

I can’t get any details either, so on retention is my guess

I would suggest you are looking at an advert with pictures of the car when it had a private plate on it, which has now been removed so the DVLA database will list it under its original age based reg number. Contact the seller to ask for the current reg?

Same here, 52k miles possibly in need of some new brake pipes.

Top lurking though, very impressive.
