Indoor cycling training - HIIT
Discussion
I've used HIIT while offshore where the stationary bikes are not all that comfortable, minimise the time on a saddle thats not suited to my rear end. I'd say it works, but I think I managed to keep my own level of fitness or minimised any loss in fitness.
I do have a Wahoo Kickr and some Sufferfest videos for when I'm home and the weather is s
tty. I do believe the Sufferfest videos help me when indoor training.

Its more of a fitness question than a cycling question.
HIIT does work in my opinion - I have doen it with a cross trainer and running.
Personally I find cycling a bit more difficult to reach those max heart rates that you need to aim for in comparison to other methods of cardio.
It takes time to adapt your body to be able to run at its max on a bike. Most new riders struggle on anything other than hills to really get the most from themselves. But you can do it with time. And it's certainly possible to ride on the edge of your limit on the flat or a static bike with a bit of practice. HIIT does work in my opinion - I have doen it with a cross trainer and running.

I'm a bit of a HIIT addict and regularly rattle through 4 - 5 sufferfest vids a week, they are very good.
Alternatively there are a number of programmes on youtube from Global Cycle Network.
As for equipment, I've just both Spin bikes and my carbon road bike on a turbo....I prefer the road bike since it feels better and you get a greater range of effort using the gears and turbo resistance!

I use HIIT training through necessity. I don't have time to go out for hours on end (young family, demanding job). I managed to train for an ironman on 4 hours 5 minutes a week by just going near enough flat out on most of my sessions.
I've recently, again through lack of any other realistic options, joined athlete lab. It does everything I want it to do, and gives me all sorts of stats to boot. I've done my FTP test so will see how good the results are after 6 weeks.
