Hi people,

my first post here!

Right here's the deal, I currently drive a 330Ci BMW and am looking for something more exotic.

I've been offered a lovely yellow Ferrari 348tb:

Ferrari 348TB. 1990(G) in Yellow. 33k miles, New mot, full Ferrari service history. Over £4000 spent in servicing since 2002 including belts. Rollcage & racing seats professionally fitted at a cost of over £5000. Challenge exhaust, Toad cat1 alarm, Sony CD player, electric windows/central locking. Sparco steering wheel, momo chrome gear shift knob.

I've been offered it for £20k dead.

What do you think, will I be in for big bills (presuming I get it inspected first)? When would the next cambelt change be due (I do about 6k miles per year)?

Does it look a good deal to you. It's a private sale, and is at least £5000 less than any others for sale in the country (am i right?). I live just round the corner from Verdi's, so should I go and check some out there too?

Any help would be much appreciated.

PS: It's going to be either this or a 3200GT Maserati.

phew blimey. Does sound nice but bear in mind that none of the extras will be worth much come resale time. £4000 in 3 years isnt a great deal spent on servicing & despite the price being cheap you could blow 5grand without a great deal of trouble if it needs work done.

My best advice would be to get in inspected, decide how long you're going to keep it & how much you'll be able to afford to spend on it & (I know its difficult but!!!) try not to let your heart rule your head too much. They are great cars but the earlier ones can be expensive to maintain. Is it RHD or LHD ?

Best of luck.

It's a LHD car, and to be honest I get bored of cars very quickly. However, this has served me well in the past, because I tend to sell my cars after only about 6 months, and they very rarely lose any value. Also, I always buy straight after a major service and sell before the next one

As an example, the BMW I've had for 6 months and have been offered £100 more than I paid for it, and never serviced it.

Now if I bought this baby and sold it in late summer on Autotrader would I lose much money? Having only done say, 5k miles?

That's my thinking.

Also, I may well get a warranty on it from Lloyds.

If it's been tracked, and presumably it has done so quite seriously to have the cage and seats, then the engine, brakes and suspension will be well used.

I would get Karl at Verdi's to give it a thorough going over, definitely checking for any engine or associated wear.

At that age and mileage, you should be able to find an unmolested LHD one for only £5k or so more. Why would you want racing seats and a roll cage unless you are buying it for the track?

Having said that - if the history is good - it checks out on inspection - then they are quite robust, and most people will assume it's worth at least three times what you paid for it.

On the whole - good cars

I didn't realise 348s were that sort of money... you're looking at high teens for a half decent 308... £5k more and you're in 348 territory...

goes back to reality...

I think this was for sale in Autotrader about 2-3 months ago @22k, don't know if it sold then, though it is still on the FOC site. I didn't fancy the mods personally so didn't go and see it (ended up paying a lot more for a later unmodified example). It probably hasn't sold yet because of the mods (no matter how much they cost). IMHO anyway.

Get it inspected at Verdi's (guessing a couple of hundred or so?) and I can't see you going to far wrong at 20k.

Chris.

I reckon if you bought it, ran it, then maybe removed the cage which will put some people off you might get a profit when you sell.

If it checks out on the inspection.....Buy Buy Buy Buy Buy! If I thought the insurance would be less than 5k (and I could bear to part with the sheffield supercar ) then I'd have it in a flash - fechrissakes it's 20k for a gorgeous ferrari!

Well things don't come cheap for no reason, so I'd get a proper inspection done before parting with any cash.

As said previously, if it's been tracked heavily for several years you could be in line for a whole load of expenses.

All in all if it is mechanically sound then it's a bargain, but look before you leap!

The car does look good in that colour.

What I don't understand, if the car is a 1990 G ...why does it have a J plate which is only allowed on a 1991/92 car....
Unless it was built in 1990 and when registered in the Uk, as a newer car,,,then there may be some confusion over the cars early history...worth checking out.

Good point, it must be a 91 onwards or there is something not right

For those who don't frequent FerrariChat it's Ray F's old race car. In this particular case, that fact is not an automatic negative.

what's the 5k for? please bear in mind that I am under the impression that 348's are nearer to 35k than 20k so in all fairness, it does have the sheen of a bargain...as long as it's in good order

edit: are you referring to the insurance statement? that was a lighthearted comment..I wouldn't really go for a ferrari unless the insurance was nearer 3k p/a TBH

LHD - bottom run of 355s start around 25k LHD. RHD cars in great condition and low miles will still be on sale (but not necessarily sell!) for 35k.

so you're only looking at a 5k differential between an ex race car (though probably in decent nick and mechanically sound) and a much less stressed car, with a proper original ferrari interior that looks the dogs.

If you're gonna track it all the time and drive on the road occasionally its a good buy. If you want a ferrari road car I would get a road car and spend the extra.

£35k, in the GTB form would be one of the very last ones on a 94 or possibly a 95 if you could find a late registered one, and in absolute mint condition, and RHD.

You can get 348 GTB in LHD for under £30k, so for a 'TB' you would normally be around the £25k mark.

If it's Ray's car then it will be A1, depending on who's had it between him and now.
