Ok a little bit of background, my 14 year is studying Japanese at school at the moment and is hoping to go to a Japanese Uni. He is also into Manga in a big way. So when we visited a Japanese culture festival in London recently I was surprised to find it was full of adults dressed up as various Manga and comic book characters. To say it was an eye opener was an understatement.

The fact that it almost seemed to be mandatory that the females had oversized boobs squeezed into what looked like spandex customs that were at least 3 sizes to small also added to the shock factor. My son on the other had no issue with this and explained that is how you dress for Cosplay

Both my other half and I were not sure what to make of this scene, and in a quite moment over coffee wondered if these folks had really kinky sex in these costumes. Anyway does anyone here have experience of this and can shed some light on this scene. I have attached a couple of vids to give you an idea of what this is all about:

There's worse things he could be doing at 14 than hanging out with girls dressed as Supergirl with half their cleavage hanging out.

In fact, why wasn't I into this when I was 14??

Just harmless fun I think.

People dressing up as their favourite comic book or video game characters. No harm or malice involved and no sexual connotations to it ..... unless you count Kelly Brook dressed up as Lara Croft!! FILTH! hehe

I don't personally do it, but I have a lot of respect for the people who do. (a lot of effort is put into these costumes)

Cosplayers are just dressing up as their idols (sort of), it is very much the done thing at comicons and gaming conventions, it is just a bit of fun and it could be perhaps thought of to be similar (but more extreme) to people getting the same hair cut or wanting the same clothes as certain tv/film/music celebrities. It could also be looked at like these event are designated 'themed fancy dress' which they of course are.

As for the skimpy female outfits, that's just Japanese computer games/manga for you, that's how the characters dress.

And of course they have kinky sexy time dressed up wink

As somebody going to ComicCon in March and May next year, I can vouch that is harmless fun.

The fun in Cosplay is actually not the 'being dressed up' part, but the making of the costume. Some people put unbelievable amounts of time/effort/money into creating accurate replica costumes and that is what people are displaying. There are guys who make full Iron Man suits with moving panels and light up eyes that look exactly like it does in the film.

There is some fun to be had dressing up as your favourite comic book/video game/film hero and it is always impressive seeing people's attempts, but the fun is definitely in the creating part.

The girls dressed in little/no clothing is just a happy byproduct biggrin

My costume for next year is:

If they don't, they probably should.

When you wrote that, I thought of Comecon. I imagined a load of fat Russian generals. I had to look up 'comicon'.

My Son is into this sort of thing and goes to conventions and whatnot with friends.

Although some of the costumes are very impressive (and the girls quite a sight to be seen) it all seems to be a bit of a mask/front. By dressing up they can hide behind the costume and interact with others there. Strip the costumes away and they're as shy and awkward as can be.

I suppose it's healthier than drinking to build up courage to meet people but I find it all a little baffling.

Couldn't the same argument be made about most clubs/interests including those interested in old British sports cars made largely out of plastic and landrover bits?
