That widely used F1 pic...

Just this afternoon I was telling a petrol-head colleague where the highly recognisable pic of an F1 navigating this hairpin bend in Derbyshire was taken, as used on the cover of Driving Ambition. Only it's not actually on the cover of Driving Ambition at all, so where am I recognising it from?

Maybe. It actually is in the book (p.178), but I think it got used more widely elsewhere. A magazine cover maybe? Anybody?The caption says:

Well, it's a stretch to call that corner a double apex, it's XP5 (K8 MCL) so certainly not Mr. Atkinson's own, although he could be at the wheel ("I have been lucky to drive McLaren's demonstrator on three occasions"). It's also about 80 miles away from the nearest bit of the Dales. Other than that, the caption is spot on!That chapter of Driving Ambition is reprinted from a magazine article that was published in AutoCar I believe. I think it says so in the book and the article may have been written by Atkinson. Would need to have a copy in front of me to be certain of these details, but for sure that's the spot and it's a beautiful photo.

Yes, I've just browsed the F1 section of my library and you are 100% correct. 
It was their Winter 1995 issue (they did 4 per year) and so that would have been about two years prior to him taking delivery of his own McLaren F1. Here's the full image that was published on the pages of the magazine, but only at about 5"x7".
Not seeing any photo credits in the article which is a little odd.
Here's a reproduction I made from an image of that page in Driving Ambition - it's a bit blown out up top unfortunately, but the source was like this and I don't have the means right now to do it any better.
The high res version of that one can be borrowed from this link
If anyone is super eager to read it I can upload scans of the full magazine article.

Great picture and I've never seen it before. At first I thought you meant an F1 had been google street mapped but could only see a Vectra and a Ka 
That actual road is only 30 miles from me. It is on the link from the famed (now average speed camera'd) Cat and Fiddle road to Bosley crossroads. I ride/drive it several times a year on both 2 and4 wheels.
I'm defininitely going to attempt a recreation......unfortunately my F1 hasn't arrived yet

It's only about 15 from me. I had a go at recreating it years ago in my Elise. Without the actual pic to hand, there was some guesswork involved and the photographer ended up standing too far to the right and the car was too far through the corner. Must try again someday.Late follow up, but I pulled this Superclassics magazine out again today and realized they had run the F1 article in tandem with one on the 1903 Mercedes Benz '60' and there was a preview page for both articles with the two cars pictured together where photo credit for the F1 images was given to photographer Tim Andrew.
