I have an issue.


After an anonymous letter of complaint from one of my neighbours I now don't feel able to use my turbo. For clarity I live in a flat and I know the neighbour and regularly walk past them and they have never once said anything to me, so the note did rankle.
Anyway I need a solution or rather need to hear from people who have tackled the same issue. Lots of info out there but don't want to spend loads if I can help it. Oh and it needs to work!

What Turbo are you using?

I live in a 2nd floor apartment and regularly use my Kurt Kinetic with no complaints. I do have concrete floors and the flats pretty well insulated, but I can't imagine it's any louder than my music/TV even under load.

What floor material are you on and what have you done already ? imagine your turbo is a washing machine on a spin cycle and that will give you some idea of the noise you are creating for your neighbours below.

On laminated floor and I only use a sweat mat under it. Very thin and not insulating really.

FWIW I have this turbo too, its not what I would call noisy but it does generate vibration and some transmission sound when used upstairs in my house.

I have a drip mat but I also put cardboard and foam between the turbo and floor (and front wheel support) I use a large piece to avoid "falling off" as it will shift around slightly, it does reduce the buzz a bit.

I have played around with the tyre pressure too but I haven't tried a trainer specific tyre, be interested to know if they make any difference?

What I did -

Bought two heavy duty paving slabs from jewson, and then put one foam matt down, then a paving slab, then another foam matt, then another paving slab, THEN another foam mat, and put the turbo on that.

It sorted the noise right out, and cost about £30

He's likely to end up in the neighbours flat with that weight!

OP. You could just buy a quieter turbo.

It was quite high yeh, but having the front wheel in the highest groove of my riser block had it basically level.

Yes it was heavy, but no heavier than a fridge or something.

I will have a go with a camping mat see if I can knock something up. Genuine lol'd at paving slabs. Not a working solution for me I'm afraid.

Its no worse than having 3 people standing talking in the kitchen is it. paving slabs + rider is still less than two people standing next to each other.

Yes, it was not a pretty solution, but with no other way and the need to train I managed to convince the mrs, we have since bought a house and I've had to find new reasons to stop myself going on the turbo

I meant the fridge although I few years have passed since I rode one, and if it is anything like mine weighs a lot at the start of the week and slowly reduces as I consume the beer inside it.

Is it worth asking the neighbour if you can come round and hear the noise, then get a mate to use it. You can also then address to the neighbour that your looking for a solution.

I have similar problem - i've never had a complaint but i do worry about the noise it makes - a week or so ago i went to Halfords to get a bulb for the car, they had some interlocking foam floor matting - 1200 x 1800 for a tenner, i haven't tried it yet but figured the majority of the noise is transmitted vibration so it may well help as its basically 10mm thick foam - will report back.
