Car Tax - and the changes?

Has anyone explored the bounds of the new rules that have come into force wrt to Car tax? I am wondering if the DVLA's shift to allowing monthly direct debit alongside their statement that as soon as you SORN your car and cancel the DD they stop taking money and that effectively means that the 6mths/12mth goes out of the window!?!I currently work away from the UK for 10-11wks and back for 4wks and so if I buy 12mths at the beginning of the month I am home, if I SORN the car in the last week I effectively only get charged for 1mth with DVLA not taking any more until I put the car back on the road 70days later - in summary, over the 12mths the car is only on the road for 3mths and I only pay 3mth road fund? Winner if this is the case. Anyone know differently?

Wouldn't it be great if you could tax it by the day? So if it's sunny just log on and buy a day. Great for those winter days when the sun is shining and the sky is blue. And if it's a rotten summer you're not wasting money by leaving it in the garage. Write to your MP! They'll all be desperate for votes this time around

They wouldn't make as much money that way, as people usually tax the car and then leave them parked for weeks or months at a time with tax still in the screen.What's actually cheeky now, is that you have to cancel the tax when you sell the car. I'm pretty sure this is only to make more money, as if you think about it, say you pay for 6 months' tax, and then sell the car on the 20th of the 4th month. You have to cash the tax in, but you only get whole months back, meaning you receive months 5 and 6. You surrender the remaining tax for the 4th month and have to write it off, even though you've paid for it.
New owner gets your car, and has to tax it right away, only they have to backdate it to the beginning of month 4. This means both they, and you have paid for month 4 and DVLA have made two sales for the effort of one, and it's YOU that did all the legwork. That's why you cannot now transfer the tax - essentially every time a car is sold privately, DVLA make an extra month's income. There was absolutely no need at all to bring that aspect of the system in, and the rest of it all makes perfect sense, so long as they police it properly, otherwise I won't bother

That's the nail hit on the head. It's not a "road tax" ie based on using the the road, it's an ownership tax. Kitchski said:

Woo Hoo, just paying for the months I can use the car without being penalised for the remainder when its sitting dormant actually makes sense! Who'd 'ave thought it - how long before they close that loop hole? Cannot wait to burn some rubber next time I'm home - just need to sort the MoT out in Feb and I'll have the whole of March to play.

To fund the BBC; worth every penny! Do you want all channels to be interrupted every 5 minutes with commercials? BBC2 & 4 are about the only channels left that make programmes for adults with an attention span of more than 10 minutes.Deeman said:

Best joke I heard in a long time:BBC making programs that you can watch? You guys on the forum crack me up!! The BBC only puts out programs to massage its own collective ego & justify the exhorbitant price of the licence fee.
