Birthday Dinner - Recommendations

Hi all,
It's the wife's Birthday coming up and I'm looking to take her out for dinner. We're into good food and she likes the more formal restaurants and the experience, so I'm looking for some recommendations around the South East of England (we're in Surrey, so anywhere up to 1hr drive).

I've been through the Restaurant/Pub Guide but there's so much choice...

Budget of approx £300 with a couple of glasses of wine. Places we've been and liked - Ting at Shangri-la, social eating house, picture, gymkhana, Ritz, Savoy, landau, drakes, stoke park, etc

Any advice would be appreciate!

Ockenden Manor in Cuckfield, Sussex is just about the most consistent 1 Michelin star country house hotel restaurant I've been to.


The Vanilla Pod in Marlow was also impressive. Quirky but brilliant menu & a charming, intimate restaurant.


Chez Bruce Wandsworth Common. This has a simple gutsy menu, with very clean, well-defined flavours.


RGR is well worth it if you haven't been. Petrus too.
The Waterside Inn less so in my opinion & you'll struggle to keep the spend to less than £400 for 2 for dinner.

That's quite a wide net you're casting there

How about a train up in to London, nice meal out maybe a theatre, hotel room and train home the next day?

Travelling in to London gets you lots of options and using the train means you can both drink and hotel means no pressure to get back.

I would STRONGLY recommend the greenhouse in Mayfair. Formal, smart, and really excellent modern French/English food. Eat off the a la carte and you'll do it for £300. 2 michelin stars if that bothers you. The best restaurant I've eaten in in London and I've eaten in a lot.
