Tea - stir in circles or random

Watched a colleague stir a cup of tea in a completely random fashion, his excuse was the sugar disolved quicker than stirring in circles. Apart from making a mess with spilt tea I can't see the logic.

So which is better?

I read recently that swishing something vertical in the cup/mug dissolved the sugar quicker than a stir. I think it makes sense.

I can't quite figure out how such random 'stirring' could be judged so I can't see it becoming competitive, also I hate to think what sudden and uneven stresses would be inflicted on a return flange designed with spm in mind.

It's the little things which keep you grounded in the real world. Stirring one's own tea is a good way of connecting with the common man. Our politicians have a number of subordinates to ensure their tea is pre-stirred. It's a significant contributing factor as to why they're so disconnected from the electorate.

I wonder which direction to stir in a circular motion. Surely the coriolis effect will also come into play, so the most efficient direction will differ if North or South of the equator?
