Help, I''m planning a drive down through Germany to the Austrian Tirol. Can anyone tell me which areas of Autobahn are derestricted? I''ll be going in a Tuscan and want to find the limit. The roads I am likely to be using are; A1/A48 to Koblenz,A61 to Mannheim, A65 to Karlsruhe, A8 past Stuttgart to Ulm, A7 to Austria. If you can help or provide alternate route that would be much appreciated. Thank you Fish.

Some of those roads sound almost familiar from a year and a half ago, when I did the same trip. I cam across a great deal of road with static speed limits, as well as a lot with variable limits, defaulting to no limit when the traffic was light. The biggest problem I found was simply that there was too much traffic around for there to be many unrestricted moments. That was winter time, which may of course lead to an increase in southbound traffic, but it's worth bearing in mind. Wasn't too frustrating since I was three up, with a roofbox, in a 7 series BMW. Acceleration was in the "eventual" league :-( Edited by Marshy on Wednesday 23 May 23:07

An alternative - It's a longer way round, but the road is excellent. Take the A81 From Stuttgart towards Singen (Dir Switzerland). 2 lanes most of the way, but 85% of the jorney is un-limited and the road can be v. quiet at the right time of day. I did Stuttgart to Zurich borders in 1hr flat. This is about 220km's (inc 20km's of no M/W)- so its a quick road. At Constanz - turn off and follow your way to Austria along the lake. Not much Autobahn, but plenty of "Country Roads" As for fines in Austria, we got stopped last year for doing 30 mph over the limit, and recieved a 3 Pound fine!!!!
