Broken where the wire inserts into the rod at the gearbox end. Car is 2010 987-2 with 40,000 sunny kms, never tracked, still on original tyres. Driver is 5'-0" female who wears a size 6 surgical glove so brute force is not likely to have been a big factor. I think the joint is too near the end of the sheath when going for reverse to stop it flexing and this has failed in fatigue. Over-crimping as well, maybe? Suggests the rod section is too short. Seems to be a few of these broken cables in the US, not so many in the UK?

These crop up time to time. I find the idea of one snapping quite scary, given it could go in any gear and leave you strandard.

Mine went on my 4 year old (sub 20k miles) 997. Left me completely stranded. Porsche Assist had to rescue the car and it was fixed under warranty. I was told it was quite 'common' problem.

This happened to me 987.1 2.7, was about 4 years old, apparently it's a common fault, cost about £300 to sort & car was trailered away. Luckily it happened as I was pulling into my work car park. Nothing you can do about it / to prevent it. Incidentally this is the only faulty that car had in the time I owned it up to about 7 years old, unlike the 997 I replaced it with that is currently getting a new gearbox not under warranty!
