Whilst working hard, I stumbled across this thread - an interesting read.

Christ-I never knew petrol contained toluene/benzene family chemicals. These are pretty damn toxic; if they're regarded as 'safe' then I can see why more exotic brews were banned from F1. Roll on hydrogen, on the proviso you can get a decent exhaust note burning it..
Reading this stuff, why don't more people forgoe this crap and get high octane fuel from airfields? Neighbour of mine flies a light aircraft and sometimes slurps a bit of 100 octane into his Ferrari 328. He told me you can get 120 (?) octane too but this won't help unless you tune the ignition gubbins to it. There's a TVR do in Duxford soon, and they don't run their Spitfires on super plus unleaded I can tell you.

But don't tell the Customs and Excise!

ISTR that benzene was only introduced with unleaded petrol..
On account of this, it's said that inhaling fumes from unleaded is carcinogenic..
Benzene is carcinogenic, but not that volatile, so you'll not get a significant dose from sniffing a bit of unleaded, and it burns up in the engine, so (unless your engine is running way too rich) there'll be sod all benzene in the exhaust gases. It was first introduced in unleaded as it has anti-knock properties to replace the lead.
