Want to get the missus a wedding present, and have found out what she really wants...

(these are examples of the model wanted)

Planning on buying over there and getting shipped back to UK, anyone had experience of the hurdles involved TAX, customs registration, insurance etc.

Thanks in advance!

The top pic looks rock 'ard! I bet it would paste most things in a straight line. Wouldn't fancy going round the corners though! It's natural habitat will be up and down the high street / drag strip.

I used to read all about these around 10-15 years ago in Street Machine. I quite fancied a caged and tubbed camero back then. Must be hard to find a tidy example.

That's a lot of metal for your money. I can't remember now, but arn't they a 525ci or something? What's that in real units - over six litres or more?

I wonder what the best handling muscle car was.

I've always liked the tubbed pro-street look. Really suits the F-body shape. Never been in one, but have heard it's a wierd ride as they bounce along on the back tyres.

I did think about importing a big Yank car (actually a 1965 Ford Thunderbird) from the States – would have cost about $6-7k – and a grand or so to ship over.

Pros and cons:

Pros: if you can find some on the net and then combine a week or fortnight's holiday there with viewing a few and then maybe buying the best one and sorting out the shipping, paperwork etc, then so much the better. Get it from the right US state and there'll be little rust . Be sure to go in with your eyes open though.

Cons: It's a long way to go to see some rubbish. Hassle. Driving tyo the port (optional, I think some shippers will trailer it for you). All the paperwork.

I think you get charged an import tax when you bring it in which is 10% (I think) of the purchase price and 10% of the shipping too (bastards). Best to go container not RORO I think but it is more expensive.

There's a URL for the crap you'll need to know but I can't find it at the mo.

Have you had a good search over here in the UK for what you want? Classic American magazine is a good start.

Why import? There are plenty of good cars here if you look hard. But look hard you must.

Camaros are nice. But only early ones like you indicated. Anything pre-72 really.
My advice - buy a copy of 'Classic American' and take a look at the 1968 Dodge Charger R/T with less than 42,000 original miles for sale.

Or get a Corvette. Far more sensible

No personal bias there at all Captain?

What about a Hemi Cuda? Always loved that bonnet air scoop....

Was it a Pro-Street Nova though? If you think it was bad on corners with a stock rear end, then wait till you try one with 15x15's and a narrowed Axle with spool, like the '67 Mustang I had! Good fun booting it out of roundabouts and would piss all over my Griffith in a straight line, but an absolute pig if you're commuting anywhere!
There are loads of companies which will import cars for you, such as Newport Imports in Kent! But as Captain Chaos said, there are plenty of top quality cars already in this country. If you really want to import one yourself, try looking at www.dealsonwheels.com
Think if I was to ever buy another one, i'd probably go for a Barracuda! Unfortunatly a Hemi version would cost mega bucks!!

There was a thread here with someone who had the most amazing prices for shipping cars around the world. Search for it - it'll be worth it...
