How does a bigger engine make better economy?

Isn't the answer in the first line of the piece?

"Honda city car gets a new hybrid drivetrain and dual-clutch gearbox"

I effect, over the mandated drive cycle the bigger engine can pull taller gears (of which the DSC can automatically choose the correct one) and the hybrid bit can assist the engine and do some regen etc.

In the real world, the car has more power than the old car, and probably weighs more, so if you use that extra performance your fuel consumption will be higher than for the old car.........
