Had this diagnosed by Greenflag when car failed to start - when key turned to engage starter motor had a series of clicking as if electrics fusing/switching on/off in quick sucession.

Question is... is this a common problem on VW Golfs? Dealer and GreenFlag think so..

I can get by for now by wiggling key in lock...
Any comments/experience of this?
Been quoted by VW for £80 incl fitting, does this sound reasonable?

Have you read the fault codes from the ECU?

I had this on my Corrado VR6 and it turned out to be the Idle Stabilisation Valve.

What exactly hace they diagnosed the problem as/replacement part to be?

Not uncommon for the ignition switch itself to play up.
