anyone got any experience of a 450 or 500, I'm in the mood for changing my Saab and quite fancy an older merc cabrio, it has 4 seats, a ragtop, nice looks so what about durability, performance, maintenance costs

welcome to the Merc and TVR club old fellow...

Another friend of mine is looking at this, Merc convertibles are bombproof and fun to drive, go for it...

The E class convertible which has four adult seats is well worth a look if you can find one....

flash you old tosser! what are these older mercs called, SLC's? I noticed loads in the US which gave me the idea.....obviously it'll have to be an older one but a 500 should have some grunt and be reasonably sound

Apache;

500 SL:
0-60 8sec
topspeed 140

450 SL:
0-60 8,5sec
topspeed 135

Topspeed for Mercedes is always a minimum speed, usually those do far higher speeds and you can drive it savely anyway.

Great and bombproof cars, engines usually good for
100thousends of miles, not much to do, but beware
of rust on seals and wheelarches (sometimes hidden by aftermarket chrome-wheelarches!).
Spareparts all available, lots on scrapyards in Europe.

It is the perfect car and that is its problem.
It is extremely boring.
Quite soft suspension and automatic gearbox.
I am used to driving a thrilling Vintage XK and the similar exciting Griff, I fall asleep immediatly in the SL - sadly as driver it is.

If you buy a good one you won´t lose money.
Beware of maxxxed ones!

If you are very lucky, there is a 560SL as well, but very rare.

Good luck!!
