Sparks

Hi, since i've had my mini its had running problems. Today we found out that its only firing on number 4cyl all the others have no spark. After taking the dizzy apart we could see that the peaks are at different heights and its hardly sparking at all. Are there any suggestions or is it a new dizzy. (its an arden(sp) dizzy)

Mini Spares will see you an Aldon 'RED' unit which will be ideal for now and later. I used to run on standard Cooper 'S' units, but the difference when I first fitted an Aldon Red was remarkable. Well wotrh the money.

He says it will be without the vacuum unit. is that ok?
The one i've got now is a yellow without.

Yes, it's fine without the vac unit.
When Aldon re-curve the dizzy they give it an increased mechanical advance which removes the need for the vac unit. All original Cooper 'S's did not have the vac unit. The Aldon units give a better advance curve than the original 'S' ones.
For a hot cam, say a Kent 276 or 286 you are best with the Aldon 'RED' dizzy.
Aldon also do a fully transistorised unit called the Aldon Igniter. I use this on my Enduro Rally car and it's been curved for best performance. It is really good.
They will send units by post and will re-build your own existing one if you wish. They charge about £80 to rebuild an exchange dizzy and if you give them a written spec they build it to suit your engine. You can get their number from their web site.

Rang Aldon and they needed to know what cam im running to set it up, also as you know Peter i may be changing my cam so im at a loss as whether to get one now?? car is a non runner without a new one though

The AldonRed is the best they do 'off the shelf'. Even then, with no vac a/r, a hot cam and a high c.r (say 11:1) even then it can be difficult to start when set for max performance at peak revs. The engine on my red car would not turn over on the starter when hot, even with a 550cca battery, after I went to 11.1:1 c.r. So I got Aldon to modify it some more with an extra 3 degrees of mech advance and since I fitted this customised unit it's been fabulous.

well sent my dizzy to aldon on tuesday rebuilt it, added an ignitor and i got it back today, how good is that!!!!
