New (to me) 987S... some questions...
Discussion
I had some fun in the car today, but as I'm learning about I've a few questions which aren't answered by the manuals, but I am sure people here can answer...
- I have a sat nav (PCM) with maps that are about 8 years out of date now. Can I update this, and if so will I have to sell the OPC a kidney in order to do it? It's a PCM 2.1 (I think), it's DVD based and seems to have a drive in the front boot for the nav.
- I love the sound of the PSE, but apart from being a bit anti-social in built up areas, are there any reasons I should not leave this on all the time? Does it harm the engine/exhaust, impact mileage or anything else?
Thanks!
Gary

I have made an adaptor for the cup holder that comes out by the glove box and fit my Tom Tom in it which is ten times better than the one in my Boxster as it has full postcode and speed cameras, it looks quite neat on the odd occasion I need it.
If I remember rightly the PSE 'quietens' itself for drive by regs but you can just remove the connection to stop it doing this.

Very helpful service, got the right discs first time (it was a HD based system). About £35? A tenth of the AM price?
Thanks.
I've spoken to a couple of "3rd party" map suppliers now, and it turns out that they are selling "backup discs", which are essentially copies of the original Porsche/Navteq discs. They are charging £35-50, much less than the £350 Porsche want for the same thing, but I am not convinced at the legality of this, which is probably why the sites seem to be quite short lived.
Now, if one were to go down that route then I am reliably informed that it's not too hard to find a website that hosts the ISO of the 2012 map disc, which one could burn onto a DVD-R on a PC and install in the DVD drive yourself...
Obviously I wouldn't advocate doing anything so illegal as this, it's almost as criminal as the price Porsche want for the OEM disc :-)

I too like to play honestly, buy the OEMs disks are stupidly expensive, particuarly given than you can buy a whole up to date TomTom satnav for £120, so I know there are those who feel that a cheaper 'copy' is acceptable :-)I've spoken to a couple of "3rd party" map suppliers now, and it turns out that they are selling "backup discs", which are essentially copies of the original Porsche/Navteq discs. Hi Gary,
I did buy one of the third party discs to try, and while the map was updated and visible (2012 IIRC), I could no longer enter a destination... Not a worthwhile £40 investment!
No doubt some are better than others. My AM one updated the operating system too (!). I will need to double check my new Porsche Satnav when I collect it to ensure it is the most up to date available given the potential challenges of updating it later.I did buy one of the third party discs to try, and while the map was updated and visible (2012 IIRC), I could no longer enter a destination... Clearly those £35 ones are illegal copies. Not judging either way, just clarifying in case of any confusion!
One word of caution, the official Porsche ones come with various update disks that update the firmware of the PCM, Phone, and various other bits. You really need the full set to be sure the latest maps will work.
PCM 2.1 is not updated very often, I think the latest that I managed to find we had our 987 was 2012.

Thanks James. I've been lent a 08/2012 CD by a friend to see if that works, and it does, but there's not a lot of difference between that and the 2009 disc you left with the car so I might just stick with that. I mistakenly thought it was a 2006 disc, but that was the spare one you left me and the later '09 disc was in the drive.I did buy one of the third party discs to try, and while the map was updated and visible (2012 IIRC), I could no longer enter a destination... BTW, great car, thanks again!
