Garmin Edge 800 - £166.39

If anyone's in the market for an Edge 800 I noticed tonight that Amazon currently has them available at £166.39 (no sensors) - can't recall seeing them this cheap.

Pretty much. The vastly superior part depends a bit on what you want from it - if you *ever* want mapping (which I don't, most of the time, but might come in handily on occasion), then you're right, and it has a bit more screen estate than the 500. Plenty of the pro peleton have(had?) 500's on the bars mind you..
Generally the -10 versions seem to have met a slightly underwhelming reception, they don't seem to move things on that much. Main reason I can see to go that way is that a lot of the updated stuff they release (particularly around power) will only go on the -10 and the 1000.

Thats a fair summary - 810 was an evolution of the 800 but retained the same form factor. The Edge 1000 is an all new unit and is much more like a mobile phone in size with a much more responsive touch screen. All 3 have the same core navigation and data functionality and at this price the 800 is great value.

The upgrade to the 10 versions very much depends on whether you are likely to pair them with your smartphone for live tracking and strava, the strava I am happy to live without live but the tracking can be great fun; we did a big charity ride earlier this year and our friends and family were logging in and watching our progress.
Also a speed sensor is great if you like to MTB, stops the annoying auto pause when in heavy canopy cover.

Note that the 1:50k "Discoverer" maps (ie, the ones that come with the Edge 800 Trail bundle) can be found on the Bay that is full of Pirates - a 2.2gb download*.
So basically you just need a ~4gb micro SD card to pop the image on and bobs your uncle.. Those maps don't just give you UK offroad coverage, they also allow the 800 to do full turn-by-turn road directions too.
Of course, piracy is bad and I would never be involved in that myself.

What's the best price anyone's seen the 510 for?
I love my 800 with OS maps for exploring with the MTB and great on the road bike but sometimes in hilly / valley forests it does loose accuracy, the 510 is supposed to have better satellite reception using the Russians as well as the Americans. Really irritating neither 800 or 810 do that, just relying on American satellites.
