Felt Z6 - Opinions Please?

I'm still looking for a road bike in the £1000, sub 10kg category.

Someone at work suggested this, but to exchange the wheels for lighter ones (bringing it up to budget):

I was previouisly looking at the Planet-X Carbon Ultegra, which now appears to be a little over budget.

I've no experience of Felt bikes, save looking at them in bike shops, so no help with an opinion of that offering, BUT...

Merida, by the way, is the second largest manufacturer of complete bicycles in the world, behind only Giant. A good number of other well known brand names are shipped out from the gates of the Merida factories

It's an upgrade over that Felt, too, with a largely 105 group, over the Tiagra slung on the Felt, and Shimano R501 wheels to complete the package. The 'Ride' is Merida's "all day comfort" range.

Upgrade the wheels to Campag Khamsin for an extra £20, so £949 all in.

They had a similar deal on a 5800 11spd the other week, that looked a good deal.

The Felt looks a good bike, bar the crankset, which is underspecced for that price point (not that there is anything wrong with it)

What are your riding 'goals'? Will you be commuting on the bike? Sportives, group rides, fancy a bit of off-roading?

What's your age and weight? How flexible are you?

To answer some questions:

I've been mountain biking (Peak District) fairly regularly since '95. Off-road I can do about 25 miles max. / c.3-4 hours duration before I'm knackered. I'm 44y/o, 5'10", 74kg. I've put on 3.5kg in the last 2 years...

I've not been out much at all in the past year or so, mainly due to family commitments and the time it takes to dismantle the bike/car, drive out to for a ride and drive back and reasssemble the car/bike. I've been going out a bit from home on the mountain bike for road rides just to get out becasue it's more convenient. I'd be using the road bike for this stuff. I aspire to do maybe 40-50 mile road rides locally, which is quite hilly (North of Sheffield/Peak District).

I considered road tyres on my old hardtail, but I'd rather have a road bike. I want something as light as possible (definitely under 10kg), and I want good components. If I buy cheap stuff I always end up upgrading it for whatever reason. Bugdet is c. £1000. I don't mind old stock or sale stuff. I want something that will last, since I don't replace my bikes every other year.

The problem is that when I ask people "which bike" I get a different answer (unsurprisingly!). The one in my o/p looked good and was suggested by a colleague, but then so do a lot of others. I keep going back the Planet X Carbon Ultegra...but for some reason there is a nagging doubt about that much bike for the money...may be totally unfounded.
