Hi

Just looking for some advice, I've got this idea in my head that I would like to rally a 996 but the regulations prevent me using the 3.4 or 3.6 engine (max 3.0). The idea is to be a bit of a homage to the 1970s classics see link to thread http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

2.7 seems to ring a nice bell in terms of the classic 911 so it would be this unit I'm interested in most.

Just thought you guys may have experience of swapping engines the other way around and could you give me any advice on how easy it would be and what about all the modern electronic bits that would need to accompany such a swap. I'm from the good old days when you just pulled a 2lt Capri S engine and box out of a scraper and stuck it straight into your 1300 Escort and away with instant hp improvement.

I know I must be the only person in history who ever wanted to put a smaller engine into a car so they could go rallying! rolleyes but hey ho needs must.

In some cases reducing the displacement of say in this case a 3.4l or 3.6l engine to bring it down to 3.0l is a solution. Not sure though if this is a real option with these engines. You'd have to talk with a reputable engine builder to learn if it makes sense.

The 2.7l to 996 swap should be about as easy as the other way 'round. A shop that has done the 3.4l/3.6l to Boxster swap should be able to advise you on the 2.7l to 996 swap.

As always, the best course of action is to keep the MY's the same. That is if you have a 2000 996 try to find a 2.7l engine from a 2000 Boxster. But a 2.7l engine from a MY 2000 to MY 2002 Boxster would be a suitable donor engine.
