Safe to take 8 year old to AS Roma game?

I've been looking at taking my son who's a mad football fan to the Roma vs Bayern Munich champions league game in October, however one of my wife's customers has put the mockers on it by telling her Roma fans are violent, particularly towards the English, and he wouldn't take his family to a football game there.

Has anybody got first hand experience and can advise either for or against?
