Head-scratching over a headset

Hi all,

I have a 2001 Giant XTC NRS DS1 bare frame that I'm building up. I took it to a bike shop last week to get some forks installed, only to be told the following:
- The Giant is designed for an "obselete" one-and-a-quarter-inch headset
- The forks (2005 Marzocchi Bombers) have a current style one-and-one-eighth-inch steerer tube
- The bearing cups are missing from either end of the Giant headset tube
- Nobody in the world will make headset bearings with an old style outer diameter and a new style inner diameter

Now to me, this sounds like rubbish, chiefly because I happen to know that the original forks from the Giant are currently running around in a brand new On-One frame, which seems pretty compatible to the guy who built it.

Can anyone please recommend a supplier of the parts I need to source for someone who knows what they are on about to put my bike together properly?

For some reason I can't get a link to work on my phone, but search ebay for 1 1/4 to 1 1/8 in cycling and there are reducing headsets there.

I presume this replaces the 1 1/4 cups currently missing from the frame, so all thats needed are that and a standard 1 1/8 headset bearing to build up the bike now?

Have a look at Hope headsets. You can buy individual upper and lower bearings with reducers etc.
