exploring around cardiff
Discussion
Hi all,
I moved to cardiff a while ago and tbh have been struggling with motivation to do any cycling more than the (brief) trip to work.
I know there are decent roads and hills not that far away, but any way I look the first and last seven miles are either dull urban A-roads, or the taff trail - which is nice, assume you like riding at walking pace a lot (and a bit further south, yielding to side turnings once every 50 yards).
I guess I've been spoilt previously, but I just can't be bothered with those. Any attempt so far to find something interesting close by on strava/ridewithgps etc turns up similar results.
I would be considering one of the local clubs - but, to put it politely, from previous experience I've liked neither club rides themselves, nor the people involved in them. Sorry, but that's unlikely to change in the near future, so I don't see much point asking why.
Anywhere nice I'm missing? Or should I just, maybe slightly sacrilegiously, just get a train to the nice parts until I'm sufficiently motivated/fit to spent half an hour* getting to them?
Cheers all.
*Yes, half an hour to travel seven miles, at least. Because traffic lights are a thing.

I'm not sure how far you want to venture outside of Cardiff but there's some great riding down towards the vale of Glamorgan. The ride along Llantwit Major, St Athan is really nice.
If you want to venture a bit further North then you have the valleys and Brecon which has some great climbing aswell.
There's some lovley roads around St Fagans, Pentyrch which are also quite nice to ride.

Right in the middle there! Quickest way out of town for you is along cyncoed road, right road the back where it joins the lane at the back of pontprennau, on Ty-draw road. Follow that to st melons road. Hand a left towards Lisvane and once at Lisvane you can turn right into the roads towards Rudry, once on those roads you can get over to Cearphillyand your away,

Ajax seems to be a huge Roadie club based in Cardiff - I don't have much love for them though as they seem hell bent on riding like total plums - riding around Coryton roundabout for example seems positively suicidal given 1) it's a f
king automotive mad house at the best of times 2) cycles are quite clearly banned from it 3) there's brilliant designated cycle lanes that run underneath it, but they.
Some of my mates have taken to the lady shave side - the run out to St. Athan seems popular, or Porthcawl via the A48. For shorter routes perhaps a trip to Penarth via the Barrage?
Really you're doing it wrong
MTBing is where it's at in South Wales - there's brilliant riding near Castle Coch and all the trail centres dotted about.

See, that's the point at which you started to go wrong. If you'd moved to Swansea, on the other hand...
...
Unfortunately that's where the work is... have given though to living a bit further out and commuting in (by bike or train - I've seen rush hour, it's not pretty), but have signed a lease for the next few months....
