Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum, having bought an 06 Boxster S. It has 29k on the clock, in great nick and has a full OPC SH w/ a major service last month.
Really love the car, fantastic to drive and am thoroughly enjoying it.
I just have one concern, which I think is not a real problem, but would like to be sure.
When the engine is on off throttle or low throttle, (casual acceleration in 1st/2nd gear, or down changing into 2nd for a roundabout for example), there is a whine from the engine bay. I am attributing this to either driveline noise, or auxiliary belt, and am sure this is perfectly normal - but I would just like to confirm this with other owners that they experience the same? (It's relatively loud, especially with hood up!)
When more meaningful acceleration is applied, the engine noise overrides the whine. The noise is definitely definitely engine speed related. When it is making the noise and I dip the clutch, the noise disappears.
Looking forward to contributing throughout my ownership.
Many thanks!

thanks guys - put my mind at rest!
at some stage I'd like a passenger ride in another 3.2 987 to be sure, but for now I'll rest a little easier!
having said that, if there is someone with a 3.2s in the Warwickshire (Stratford) area that could spare me 10 minutes sometime, i'd be really grateful!!

Most whines are normal, but there are some that aren't - as I have recently found out! If you have the air con on, try turning it off and seeing if the whine goes away. If it does, then it is likely to be a low gas issue with the air con.
I also had a whine that was attributed to the water pump, but that was also noticable when the car was at idle - inside the car it was a whine, from outside the car (on the driver side) it sounded like a weird combination of a gurgle/rattle. There are videos on YouTube with the exact noise - have a search on there.
If it doesn't sound like either of those, it's probably nothing and just one of the many weird and wonderful noises these things make!

I noticed a whine in similar circumstances in my brand new 981 and, being a typical boy with a new toy and having precious paranoia, I called a couple of service depts. They said from my description it sounded normal. I also posted on here - people said much the same. I went to my local Porsche Centre where a technician went out with me. Normal he said. Paranoid me asked to go out in another car they had - and of course it was the same.
Of course I can't guarantee your whine is normal, but it seems it probably is. I know it's hard to relax with a new toy, but unless you really suspect something, enjoy your new car, do relax and have fun!
