Most of my rides are early morning here in Dubai, 65 & 85km's. The rides start at 0600hrs and I typically don't eat before I go out as I feel a bit like Patsy Kensit in Ab Fab when I do, and this is despite me being a very big lad.

The last few weeks in 40+ degree heat I have completely blown up so am guessing I need to start eating? This morning I had a high carb/high protein bar from the body builders place in the local Mall. I felt better this morning but had changed to white cycle gear..... The bar was 300 calories!

What do you guys eat before you ride?

Generally a take on porridge, either pre made and cold, greek style yoghurt, milk and some form of flavouring so either fruit, or as I have made for the last few days banana and peanut butter, or hot with similar sort of flavouring/toppings. I very rarely go out without eating unless I'm doing a specific fasted (food not speed) ride, but if I don't have much time between getting up and going out I'll just take it easy for the first part of the ride to ensure my body has some time to actually getting digesting.

On my morning commute I don't eat anything (25km) as there just isn't time to eat and let it settle. For club rides, I usually have wholemeal toast with jam, or if it's going to be a particularly long one, peanut butter and jam! I carry a couple of gels as well as a backup but I usually only have one of these unless it's over 100km.

A light breakfast that gets your sugar /carb levels up should help you on your way. Carry gels /bars with you and eat as you need to, everybody is different and everybody has different needs on a ride so experiment and find what works best.

If I'm only going under 60kms or so in the morning I'll go without breakfast, have a coffee and take a bar and gel with me just in case but I think the "morning training fasting" theories are pretty interesting and seem to work for me.

There is more stored energy (9 kcal) in a gram of fat than in an equal weight of carbohydrate (4 kcal/g). Typically, about 50,000 to 60,000 kcal of energy are stored as triglycerides in the entire mass of all of the adipocytes throughout the body. Obviously, there will be more energy stored in an obese person and less in an individual who has little body fat (Figure 1). Approximately 100 kcal of energy are expended per mile of walking, so most people have sufficient stores of triglyceride energy to walk 500-1,000 miles

Olympic Breakfast every time.

Or a 'Roadrunner' from 'The Barn Cafe' at Newlands Corner. That, despite the old Doris that ran the place not liking cyclists much. Closed now, though, I think frown

Usually granola and yoghurt but I'm currently trying the James Hunt diet. It doesn't seem to be helping energy levels though and has the opposite effect to an espresso.

Yep. He wasted the rest of his cash, though.

Most of my riding is commuting and my commute is 25km each way. I don't eat breakfast before the commute. I have a pint and half of squash and my eat my breakfast when I get to the office. I have a large bowl of cereal and a banana. I have a normal lunch and half an hour before I leave for my cycle home , I have a slice of toast with some whole earth peanut butter on it.

The slice of toast at 5pm is essential otherwise I get really hungry on the ride home and want dinner as soon as I walk through the door. This doesn't work well with Mrs BakerStreet.
