In this months sprint, is that a picture of the top end of a speed 6 engine with the TVR Power article ?

If so are there any experts out there who know the answers to some questions :

The removed cam - do a couple of the lobes have the wear pattern assoicated with a well worn follower ?

Are the followers the things between the cam and the valve top ? If so they're different than I imagined - I didn't expect the cam to be above the valve. What advantage do followers provide here ?

Where do the shims go ?

Cheers,

Andy.

P.S. If this is a picture of the V8 I'll feel a right berk!

I am no expert but I have seen the top end of a speed six in pieces (mine) and that cam in the picture does appear to have excessive pick up from the follower.

The followers are between the valve the cam and the valve top & the shim’s are located on top of the valve.

The picture was one of several that I took, the marks on the inlet cam laid across the head are probably blobs of grease because it was a new cam waiting to be assembled. Would have been better if we'd used another picture without it resting there...oh well.

The lobes have a strange profile anyway because the lobe wipes across the face of the follower, changing the distance of the lobe contact on the follower relative to the pivot point, so effectively changing the follower ratio. The lobe profile is ground to take account of this so that the valve *lift* is what they want.
