Mtb sizing...

I'm on the verge of buying my first mtb for a long time, I'm5'9"- 5'10", average legs(inside leg 30"/arms I hope!).

Im not sure if I should go for M (18") or a L (20") frame. if I was to choose one, not knowing 100% which one is suitable, should I get the M, on the possibility it MAY be a tiny bit too small, or get L, With it possibly of it being slightly too big?

Which would be the easiest/cheapest to adjust if that is the case?

Medium.

Can be trimmed to suit further via stem. Sizing not as critical as a road bike for mtb, but always err on the smaller size.

Bike sizes differ too much.

I would go to the shop and sit on a bike before buying one.

Medium. I'm (a tiny bit) taller than you and ride a 17.5.

What brand is the frame

People are often between sizes and going for the smaller size is better as you can use longer stem, wider bars and longer seat post to fit better. With a larger bike your stuck with it.

Or better still choose another brand/model to get one which fits without too much adjustment needed.

It's called a Carrera Vengeance, it's currently on hotukdeals at a discounted price of £162 which according to alot of people commenting on the thread, is a very good price for what you get.

I see you can get it from Halfords for £199.99.

They claim is "was" £450. It is firstly a 2011 bike and it doesn't have the spec to be £450 ever.

For £162/£199 it looks good value.

Pop down to Halfords and try another Carrera bike before taking up the £38 saving.

I'm 5'11, my first commuter in 2010 was a (different) Carrera. 18". Was ok, could have got away with the 20" too though. Fits my son perfectly and he is 5'9 (at the mo). The bike soldiers on just fine, got the same cable brakes which are ok.

Agree it's a good deal, sub £200 doesn't buy much elsewhere these days. Honest enough entry level bike for towpaths, cyclepaths etc. Carreras sell well on ebay once you're done, being a recognised brand.

Well I'll probably go for the medium, but will pop into a halfords for that first time in many years, and see if I can try the two sizes to get a comparison.

I think I'm right in saying if you're gonna ride off road you would be better with shorter - would alow you to move your weight back for decents etc. better.
